A-Rod? Really?

Yogi has more rings than every team in the bigs other than NY. He's in.

It's amazing how Yankee fans have just forgotten about Reggie Jackson. He was like Yankee God when I was a kid. Do his A's years hurt him in Yankee fans eyes? Or will Jeter suffer the same loss of popularity in the ensuing decades?

I think your top four is correct, with Joltin Joe added at #5. The debate starts at #6. I'd put Rivera there, but I won't quibble with Jeter partisans. It's not like I like the Yankees.

And that shamefully leaves off Gehrig and Yogi. Wow. Loaded history.

Yes, it is a loaded history since we're not even considering guys like Alex Rodriguez and Rickey Henderson who are likely to be among the games all-time greats in offensive statistics. But they put up huge numbers while they were playing for other teams.

I think A-Rod is in the top ten.

I always view greatest players as i described above. Total package. Reggie is left out for me for a few reasons.

1) I wasn't alive when he played for NY.
2) The others were in NY longer than 5 years.
3) Not a TOTAL knock but tied into #2, NY was one stop in his career. He played elsewhere before and after. He just doesn't have the "Yankee aura" that most NY fans like. That isn't a big one for me but I would guess it plays into the minds of most.

I agree with this. Playing an entire career with the Yankees have a huge impact on their "Rushmore"

Jeter and Mo are both superior to Yogi Berra.

Yeah, what did Yogi ever do other than win three MVP's and finish second two other times? He also was perhaps the only catcher in history who could play 140+ games a year and still play at an All-Star level, year in and year out.

If you're trying to compare HR's and RBI's of course not.

All-Time Stats as a NYY that favor Jeter
If you go by hits Jeter ranks #1
If you go by doubles Jeter ranks #2
If you go by games played Jeter ranks #1
If you go by stolen bases Jeter ranks #1

I think Jeter is a great one, but Dimaggio went to war for 4 years in the middle of his career, and played 5 fewer seasons than Jeter.

Catchers were vastly overrated in importance back then.

I think so. Every single guy we are talking about played basically their entire careers as a Yankee.

As a Yankee? No freakin way. He and Clemens aren't even really liked by Yankee fans.

Don't forget about Ivan Rodriguez. He was a beast, as well. He could do everything Yogi did.

It's a tough one. I think he is still top ten if you just take his Yankee years. I don't think he will go anywhere else after his contract is up. He has been with the Yankees for 9 years now.

9 years. .294, 288 HRs, 914 RBIs, 130 Stolen Bags, 2 MVPs, 3 Silver Sluggers, 7 AllStar appearances. isn't too bad.
