Rankings are a joke so far

It's why pre-season polls are the worst. Ohio State has not looked like a top 10 team at all.
Rankings would be so much better if there were no preseason polls.

Ohio State does not belong in the top 10 at all. I guarantee they will lose 1 to 2 more games before seasons end.

They're still a top ten team because the same people who voted this week thought they were a top ten team at the beginning of the year. So they're going to keep them there so that their prophecy is guaranteed to be fulfilled. You see, the voters are always right!

Wut? If OSU only loses 1 or 2 more games, they'll be a top 10 team. 10-2 is a guarantee of a top 10 ranking for a P5 team.

But here's the problem. Ohio State finishes 10-2 but began with a #2 ranking. They will stay in the top ten the entire year.
Meanwhile (hypothetically), a team like Minnesota finishes 10-2 as well, but they weren't ranked in the preseason. They won't even be ranked until a month or so into the season, and they'll be lucky to break the top ten by the end of the year.
Because of that, Ohio State gets a New Years Six invite and they play in the Rose Bowl because they're Ohio State and they've been a top ten team all year. And Minnesota goes to the Alamo Bowl because who the Hell is Minnesota?

Teams used to drop only a mandatory 6 spots in the 80's and 90's - we just bitch more these days.

FSU would lose to Miami and drop to #3...in week 2! Everyone else was like frick, how we going to leap-frog this 1-loss mother-fricker even though we are undefeated????
FSU was like a roadblock. They'd lose to Miami, stay right there. FSU loses to Notre Dame in week 10 in 1993! They only drop to #2. Those frickers would never drop out of the Top 5...no matter when and how they lost (and they were unanimous preseason #1 in 1993 - so you basically had to kill them three times to knock them out of the Top 5.)
They end up winning the National Title over an 11-1 Notre Dame team that beat them.

Because as I said, it determines whether you play in the New Years Six and get tons of revenue and exposure, or play a bowl game in Orlando on Wednesday morning on ESPN2.
Teams like Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame and USC have enough advantages as it is. The preseason poll guarantees them one more, because if they meet the minimum ranking requirements, they'll jump the line and get one of those bowl games and perpetuate the cycle.

They aren't irreverent. The committee is full of shite if they say these polls and big time storied programs don't have a say in their polls

if you have paid attention last year, there was a difference between the polls. In fact the opposite happened, these polls tried to mirror the CFP once those were released
