Agreed. I'm a die hard Mavs fan. But now that Spo has two rings, I guess he deserves some respect? That's the thing, when you have that many superstars, people think anybody could do it.
I remember the jokes back in 2011 that Pat Riley was just itching to Fire spo and take over the team

I say that more from his Portland days. He had an okay roster, but got to what, four straight Western Conference finals? And two NBA finals?

Very good, not great and definitely not elite.

quote:and its bullshite. no one won titles with MJ/pip before or after phillip. and no one won a title with kobe/shaq before, or after phillip. theres an art to coaching superstars, and theres absolutely a strategic element to coaching elite NBA playoff basketball. its never as simple as rolling the basketball out and wearing a suit.
hat's the thing, when you have that many superstars, people think anybody could do it.

Spo is a superb coach, so is phil jackson
I love how neither has coached a team with no less than 2 superstars...EVER
You want a great coach? Rudy Tomjanovich. The guy took a roster of Hakeem Olajuwon and
kenny smith
vernon maxwell
robert horry
otis thorpe
sam cassell
mario elie
carl herrera
scott brooks
Matt Bullard
yes a roster of utter crap and then navigated them to an NBA championship without 2-3 hall of famers on the roster like michael/scottie or kobe/shaq/glen rice or lbj/wade/bosh
Hakeem and turds won a title
If you think phil jackson or spoelstra could do what pop does in san antonio and make a small market stay competitive you are nuts! Having superstars makes your life easy no doubt.

Spo is at worst the 2nd best coach in the NBA. Pop cost the Spurs game 6, and ultimately the series.
The Rockets have gotten out of the first round once in 15 years and he was the coach of that team. Then he didn't coach another all-star for the rest of his tenure there.

quote:and could never close it out. hes great at accumulating wins. i always thought he was great while in houston, but then kevin freaking mckale does better than him..... in hindsight, he wasnt all that impressive. i dont believe he belongs among the other guys in tier 4.

I guess you missed Spo's first two years in Miami. Unless you are counting a way passed his prime Jermaine O'Neal as a superstar.

Hakeem and turds won a title
