At the time, the Rams were hailed for being progressive by drafting the first openly gay player in the National Football League. It turns out, according to multiple sources, that the league agreed not to ask the Rams to appear that year on HBO's yearly summer series, "Hard Knocks," if they drafted Sam.

Jeff Fisher was worried HBO would reveal his secret to being mediocre.

I'm surprised it took this long to get out.

It was fairly obvious the league was calling around trying to get someone to take a flyer on him. I truly don't think the teams cared a ton that he was gay, more that a ton of press around a 6th/7th round type draft pick is weird/distracting.

While we have long known he was drafted only because he was gay, it's pretty shitty to think that some deserving player out there didn't get drafted because he was straight.

I don't really think that either. A lot of guys that have limited athletic upside but great college production get drafted in the late rounds. Once you get past the 4th round or so, there's noticeable faults with everyone. Athletic mythical creatures who can barely play the position and guys that are very niche players regularly get picked up. Hell, Belichick drafts deep snappers, and he's considered a pretty good draft guy (personally, I think he gets overrated a bit, but even Ozzy Newsome has had some terrible drafts).

same shite happened a few years back with the military guy who would avoid service if he was drafted. there were reports teams were avoiding him b/c they didn't want the media focus for a likely marginal player (and the backlash if he didn't work out)

He had a poor Combine, but it isn't totally out of this realm to think a player that won SEC Defensive Player of the Year would be deserving of a draft selection.

not only that, but quite a few undrafted players are picked up by teams after the draft ends. nobody was denied an opportunity just because sam was drafted.

For real. One of the few teams that shouldn't have cared if they got picked for Hard Knocks is the mediocre and plain vanilla Rams.

Unless Jeff Fisher secretly keeps Nazi memorabilia in his office or something, why would he care?

Is this what the NFL has become? A propaganda machine for PC culture?

Michael Sam did display a great deal of courage and dignity with the way he handled the situation. Can you imagine having to actaully play for the St. Louis Rams? It would be horrorible. (Sarcasm)

Which makes the Rams deal to be on Hard Knocks this season laughable.

Demhoff said they would never be on that show, teams end up embarrassing themselves.

But they need something badly, they have an average at best team who has no offense, but gurley, they have to get some excitement for this season.

Seriously, how pumped up would you be with the Qb's they have, Wr's they have, OL they have, and coaching staff they have????

I don't think this is too surprising. But the fact that this came out two years later is pretty damning. This used to be the kind of news that would leak out 10-15 years later.
