A better question would be this: what exactly makes the watch that valuable? Are these people simply inside of an elitist bubble - selling pretty ordinary stuff to each other at wildly exaggerated prices
this is my question. Has there ever been another time in history where ordinary materials and workmanship is sold at almost 50,000x the normal value?

watches worth that much don't need advertising ... how many aston martin commercials you ever seen? ...

Think about it... and oh yes... I'm jealous.
If it is not that pricy because of ornamental reasons the only thing a watch is good for is to tell time. If I can get one for $20 that loses a second a day what does he do that is so important that he has to pay that much to avoid resetting it by a minute once every 2 months?

he definitely makes money wearing it.
People on Nadal's level get paid to use and wear what they wear.
If they want to wear something their sponsor doesn't make they either get a sponsor who does, or their sponsor makes it for them.
No he doesn't. This isn't an item that they're trying to sell to the masses.

Nadal doesn't have mass appeal. He has upperclass appeal.
Country club sports sponsors are legit

They make 50 of them, dude. You don't give one to a sponsor when you make 50.

Looking at that white watch, how in the Frick do you tell time. I saw the dials but it's bloody hell seeing them with all the gears showing. That's an ugly stupid watch. Fricking pointless.
I would be envious if it were a bad arse car that had super turbo or maybe some crazy cell phone gadget. But a watch, no watch should cost that much ever.

It's marketing for the name brand, not just that 1 specific type of watch

It definitely isn't "ordinary workmanship." Those Richard Mille watches can keep accurate time while withstanding thousands of G's of pressure. Now there really is no practical reason why a person would need that, but it's still impressive as hell from an engineering and craftsmanship standpoint.
