He bumped out Penn St. because he attended the UT/Arkansas game and UT won, which all gave them the boost to be No. 1 in the polls?

Penn State had a couple of unbeaten seasons back then, but their schedule was regarded as weak.

I don't think it was inadvertent. Nixon went to the UT locker room and declared them champs.

Right, but that doesn't mean that they are the best...

Nixon knew what was going on at Penn State and put them on his enemies list

That's what presidents did before NCAA brackets were big.

Texas and Arkansas were #1 and #2 in both polls.

IIRC Penn State could have chosen to play Texas in their bowl game and dodged them.

Wasn't that the year Notre Dame came back to bowl games?

Yep, that was their first bowl since the 1924 season.

They bumped LSU out of the Cotton Bowl that year, and the Tigers refused the Liberty and Bluebonnet bowls.

Texas was number 1 and beat number 2 Arkansas in Fayetteville. I don't think Nixon going into a locker room made a difference.
