Good news for the NFL

quote:

After delays due to Hurricane Irma hitting Florida, Nielsen has ratings results for Sunday Night Football (8.0/26)

Even though the clash between the winning Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants on Sunday was only up 7% among adults 18-49over the early numbers for the September 11, 2016 official kickoff of SNF, a rise is good news for a league and a network hit by declining numbers last year. That good news comes with even more sunshine for all concerned afterthe September 7 start of the 2017-2018 season took a ratings and viewership slam from 2016. It also comes with portions of the nation focused on the extreme weather, as preemptions nationwide for Irma coverage.

With that in mind, Sunday’s Cowboys-Giants big market matchup is currently up almost 1 million viewers over last year’sSNF start in non-adjusted numbers with an audience of 21.56 million. Those numbers will likely see significant changes when final numbers come in.

Not so good

quote:

ETA: As the aftermath of Hurricane Irma still plagued Florida and delayed ratings collection, the annual doubleheader saw both games down from the 2016 MNF debut. With 48 of 56 local markets reporting, the Minnesota Vikings 29-19 win over the Saints and the Denver Broncos 24-21 victory over the newly City of Angels minted Chargers snagged a 7.8 and 7.0 respectively in overnight ratings.

Put another way, game-to-game, that’s down 14% from the September 12 2016 Game 1 38-16 battle between the winning Pittsburgh Steelers over the Washington Redskins in an apples to oranges comparison. The lack of a straight contrast for both games this year is only fair with 2016 metered market numbers being based on a full 56-market assessment. The Vikings vs. Saints game peaked between 9:30 – 9:45 PM with a 9.9 rating

For the Broncos vs. Chargers game, the difference to 2016’s San Francisco Giants 28-0 thrashing of the L.A. Rams was negligible with just a 1.4% dip. The close and genuinely dramatic 2017 Game 2 hit its high of 9.4 in the 10:30 – 10:45 PM slot.

If Dallas/NY is only up 7% vs New England/Arizona, I'm not sure it's all that good in the end.

-Two huge markets
-Nothing else on TV
-Sunday being universally a leisure time for the US.

7% increase is not great

They will never reach 2000-2010 numbers again.

Sports in general viewership is declining by population %-wise and not overall #'s.

Movie attendance is down again and again.

Maybe people are getting back to the basics of life?

Or maybe they are just too fricking busy to spend 4 hours watching a football game with a baby crying and a job to go to in the morning? While the game is still on at half-past midnight on the East Coast.

NFL doesn't cater to the fans, they cater to fricking Corporate Sponsers who want certain commercials played at certain times.

This should have an asterisk beside it. When good, Dallas always draws decent #'s.

It's not even an asterisk, it's an L

Last year it was down 16%. they threw everything they had at their ratings problem

Divisional game
Team with biggest national following
New York tv market
On opening weekend
Network TV

7% up from a 16% decrease. going to be a long fall for Roger

What does movie attendance have to do with it?

People have always had children and jobs to contend with.

The issue is people are cutting the cord because of rising cable costs and would prefer to spend their time with other activities. And TBH people love blaming millennials for shite, but I don't think the interest is as strong in that demographic as it once was.

Now I'm curious to see the MNF numbers. Especially that SJW shite show of a late game. Something tells me that one will not be so great.

It helps that NBC actually puts together a competent broadcast, with some of the people in the business live and in studio

I see a lot of people proclaiming their self-righteousness by "boycotting ESPN" or "boycotting the NFL".

Screw that.

I'm not letting political bullshite getting in the way of my enjoyment of the game of football.

I wore the uniform for 20 years, so yes it pisses me off when people want to make a political statement by not standing for the anthem. They have the freedom to be stupid because we bought that for them. I'm thankful for the freedom I have to enjoy the game despite certain people associated with it being stupid (in my opinion).

I could give two flying foxtrots about ESPN's "political/progressive agenda" as long as they keep putting on the games I want to watch. If I'm really annoyed, I'll just change the channel. I guess I'm just not that fussed.

At the end of the day, if you feel like you're "making a difference" by not watching football, good for you pumpkin. Please, make sure you tell everybody about it, like you're the "cross-fitter of the TV remote". Truth is, nobody gives a shite.

But I'm glad that you are free to make your decision nonetheless.

edit: lsulefty, this isn't aimed at you personally. I'm just having a rant.

Numbers go down... gloating.

Numbers go up... excuses.

It's like they have a vested interest in seeing the NFL fail.
