Phil could manage egos because he had GGGGRRREEEAAATTT players who naturally had egos. So that lame arse notion sticks with him.

Pop is GOAT.

Hey, hey brother I more than admired those Pistons teams. Perfect teamwork and played team defense like it is suppose to be played.

My point is that it shouldn't have mattered when you had 2 behemoths like Shaq and Kobe. That is just inexcusable in all aspects.

I thought Shaq was going to eat Wallace down-low (he did) yet inexplicably they would stop feeding him the rock.

I ate it up when they lost. It was glorious. I hate the freaking Lakers. Hate them.

sure. we have been given a chance to watch pop mold his coaching philosophies and styles as the game has evolved. he obviously gets credit for that. and sure, i would say that he was at the end of the day a better x and os coach even though i will go to my grave saying phil is pound for pound the greatest playoff coach the nba has ever seen and always was great at making mid series rotation adjustments. iirc the only playoff series he ever lost with the lakers when the lakers held a lead in the series was the 2006 series against the suns

but lets not try to act that phil was a game manager throughout his career when he and tex winters made the triangle what it is and its something that is used all over the place in the NBA to this day

the only times i was ever really confused as to what he was doing in the playoffs was in the 04 finals. ,aybe the 2011 series against the mavs but that was such a weird thing

I will say that beating that Celtics squad was personal. He didn't like getting his arse whipped that first go round.

That was the most important championship on his resume. Had he lost twice to Doc Rivers??

F no.

Shaq and Kobe didn't have much to work with, man.

Payton and Malone were cringeworthy with that squad.

I didn't know shite about how basketball should be played back then and they still felt off to me.

that was the height of the kobe/shaq feud and kobe was playing hero ball. he had only one fewer fg attempt than shaq in game 3 and had more in game 4. that shouldnt have happened

OH, absolutely, they were way off..

But, still. You have two players who are top 10 PLAYERS of all-time. (Yes, Kobe is considered a top 10 by some folks). Shaq was feasting like thanksgiving underneath the rim.

My main point is that Phil totally failed that year with building anything substantial and after that year everything went to shite as Shaq left and Phil. You had coaches on Lakers openly dissing Shaq and all. Just a total mess. We act like Phil kept things together with the Zen, but really things were falling apart fast in Lakers land behind the scenes.

If Darko got more run Detroit would have swept.

While MJ is far and above the rest, he has had Robinson, Ducan, Parker, Ginobili, Leonard (who is on his way), LA.
Just saying, Pop has had HOF'ers as well.

Popovich becomes the first coach in NBA history to win a playoff series against 14 different Western Conference teams There are 15 total

I saw a tweet yesterday that the rockets were the only team that he hadn't beaten in the playoffs (Hadn't played them). This says 14 outta 15.

You obviously are prisoner of the moment. What about all those years the spurs underachieved? If Pop is that great, they should have won a lot more. Pop had many teams more talented than this that didn't make the Finals. This Rockets series means nothing about Pop. They played a team that played ZERO perimeter defense. They had one guy play any defense at all. One guy.

I mean, it's hard to win a title. Nobody can win every year. Spurs have gone to the conference finals now 10 times in the last 19 seasons.

This is true. Phil's greatness is in dealing with these massive egos he coached with the Lakers and Bulls. Great motivator too, but he's never been known to be a great X's and O's coach.

That was a heartbreaking series. If it weren't for Fisher's miraculous game winning shot with 0.4 secs left in Game 5 the Spurs would have been up 3-2 and who knows what would have happened. Instead they went down 3-2 and lost on the road in game 6.
