Much more of a tactician. Able to adjust to different eras of the game. Solid coaching tree. Did it in small market.

Popovich becomes the first coach in NBA history to win a playoff series against 14 different Western Conference teams There are 15 total

If Pop had Jordan, Pippen, Shaq, and Kobe??

He would have won ALL of them and not have lost to the Pistons and the Celtics.

That 5 game sweep by the Pistons was ugly as frick. Yes, 5 games. That 1st game with that lucky arse 3 by the Lakers was a loss too.

Bait set.......

Pop would have probably traded them away. He's not dealing with egos like that.

Prepare yourself for the loaded questions .

"Is Duncan better than Kobe?"

"Did the lakers have better support players than All world Tony Parker and MANU?"

Phil owns Pops soul.

Phil's coaching getting the garbage Lakers squads in 06 and 07 to the playoffs shits on Pop

The way he handled the Pistons the following year is what sold me that he was the better coach. They were just as physical and hard-nosed and took it to the Pistons at their own game.

I didn't think they would beat the Pistons that year. Thought they would be too soft. He coached a hell of a series against that Pistons squad. I was a big Pistons guy because of the way they played the game with such organization, defense, and teamwork.

I was sold after that series.

Remember he had "The Glove" and "The Mailman" also on that squad.

It was all about giving the Mailman his long awaited trophy.

Well to be fair they were both much past their primes and Malone was hurt in the finals.......not that I think the Lakers won the series with him healthy

Just stop...

We are talking about the Lakers here. Glove, mailman, Shaqtus, KB, on one squad.

Shaq was dominating that series and they wouldn't give him the damn ball ..

check the youtube post-game if they still have it with Shaq.

I totally forgot that they settled the finals in a 15 second shoot off.

The Pistons had Ben Wallace at Center. Lakers had Shaq and Kobe.

WTF?

And we are making excuses?

I will say it one more time... They had SHAQ AND KOBE.. The Pistons had 6'9 Ben Wallace at Center; Rip Hamilton; Chauncey Billups; Tayshaun Prince; etc... Rasheed Wallace.

Not one top anything; no one who could guard Shaq or Kobe.

no one is making excuses

that was an upset. it happens. do we really want to go down this road though and start looking at the what the frick losses pop has had in the playoffs?

literally every single coach has had stuff like the 04 finals. even pop. it happens

and no, i have not forgotten that the lakers beat the spurs to get to the 04 finals

Jackson is/was great at what he does. Maybe better at it than Pop. But looking back with hindsight now I think it's clear Pop is a much better x's and o's coach and evaluator of talent. Phil could manage egos and motivate and run the triangle. Pop spots diamonds in the rough and manages 38 year old legs and shapes them all into whatever he needs them to be year after year.

You HAVE to make room for teams in sports who are just a perfect fit.

Those frickers were amazing.

ETA: They also made me fall in love with basketball so I might be biased.
