if it was moved to europe, they might have to move it to another date since it's so early in the year, and the travel could be an issue, per a pga pro on the carnevale show today ...

i think they'll have to move the dates a bit anyway. right now, it's smack dab in the middle of the florida swing.

I wonder if Cadillac was bailing out as the title sponsor? That and the Tour/Finchem wanting to distance themselves from Trump tell me that the tournament was moving and the backers in Mexico City came up with the best offer.

they didn't renew ... pga signed a 10 yr deal with trump doral, but it included an opt out if they couldn't get a sponsor ... cadillac announced its opt out before the last tournament there ...

Well yes, Cadillac was not going to renew. However...it does seem a bit hairy considering Trump had just renovated the entire facility top to bottom and make the course to the PGA'S specs and approval ---- just to have it ripped out from under him

There's a lot of moving parts here for sure - but now the PGA Tour has to invest millions of their own money into the MC facility to make the WGC event viable long-term which seems awfully expensive and quick to pull the trigger on such a thing

I agree. There's a hell of a lot more to the story than we are being told. I suspect Finchem's said all he's going to say. Donald?? Who knows.

would imagine this does not help trump's desire to have the open return to turnberry ... if they'll keep it out of muirfield, they'll keep it out of turnberry ...

Big difference between moving the tournament to Mexico City and moving it to a beach/resort city in Mexico. Surely there is a worthy course. I'd be hesitant if I were I pro. Hell, just this week a MEXICAN soccer player was kidnapped in his own damn country and it is suspected cartel activity. He had to steal a gun (I believe shot someone, not 100 on that) and escaped.

All this.Very questionable the PGA couldn't find a corporate sponsor other than Cadillac... Which mind you Cadillac gave the heads up a year in advance they wouldn't renew.

Exactly why I wrote earlier that I think there's a hell of a lot more to the story than the title sponsor angle.

I think you're starting to see why actual wealthy Americans don't normally run for major office.

It can and will mess with the bottom line no matter what side you are on

i think i heard on golf channel that it's in a very safe area outside of mexico city?

eta: you know, as safe as mexico city gets. i think any concern for the players would be the transportation from the airport to the course area.

shaun micheel was on sirius earlier and said he didn't think security would be a reason players don't go ... pga has some ex fbi guy running security ... i don't see large crowds there, though ... i'm sure the wealthy folks in the area will go, but i'm not sure the middle class folks will want to go ...

That's what one of my coworkers said as well. It's in a nicer area and there's a military base close by.

Doral has been a PGA tour staple for like 50 years and it's really close to the homes of a shite ton of players. Even if it was moved to somewhere other than Mexico City, I think a lot of players would be pissed about this.
