"(Alonzo Mourning) was big, but getting Shaquille changed everything for our franchise."

Though those Heat-Knicks postseason meetings in the Mourning era were gripping, O'Neal and Dwyane Wade brought the franchise its first title, and Riley says it was O'Neal's arrival that changed the trajectory of the organization.

"The seminal moment to make us really, really legitimate," Riley said. "He turned our franchise around. He gave us real legitimacy."

Makes a lot of sense to me. If Shaq never goes there, then a very legit question is if they ever even get Lebron.

Kenny Smith put it best in perspective "If the Shaq deal doesn't go down, LeBron doesn't think about going to Miami"

That just isn't true. As long as Wade was there and the salary cap situation was right, LBJ still thinks about going to Miami to play with his best friend.

Dumbest shite ever argued. If you can't get off the LeBron hate wagon after last year's finals, you can't be an objective fan.

You're actually fricking retarded if you believe that.

Would they have gotten LeBron if Shaq doesn't come to Miami, win a title, and help Wade become a beloved figure on South Beach? Does Wade bolt to the Bulls earlier?
This.

It's pretty obvious even without context or a hint.

Wade being on a pedastal has nothing to do with LBJ's decision, imo. CP3 nor Melo have won anything and LBJ has stated plenty of times he would want to play with them. The stars (no pun intended) aligned perfectly for "the decision", previous Heat championships be damned.

Acquiring Shaq got them their 1st title ever.

When the Big 3 showed up, titles were an expectation.

I don't see a context that would make that statement valid tbh
Shaq became a law enforcement official in the Miami area and worked primarily on catching child predators. He worked to make Miami a better place in a way James didn't.

There's that.

I love Shaq, my favorite player growing up. But he was simply serviceable in Miami. Antoine Walker had more pts/game in the finals. Now, I understand the context Riley is getting at

"Serviceable" sells him short, but yes, both Wade and Haslem had more win shares in the 05/06 season than O'Neal.

He wasn't a superstar or top player is my point. He was above average, but nothing more at that point

I don't really blame Riley for saying this. Shaq played a major role in the Heat winning their first championship. As Michael Irvin once said "None of the championships ever come close to being as great as the first." Winning championships in 2012 and 2013 were great but I doubt Heat fans and team executives were as ecstatic and over the moon as they were in 2006 when they won it all for the first time. So Riley probably is being genuine when he says Shaq was the greatest acquisition in Heat history.
