CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers on Thursday released veteran defensive end Charles Johnson.

The move clears $11 million in salary cap space for 2016.

"Charles was an impact player for the Carolina Panthers for a long time, both on and off the field," general manager Dave Gettleman said in a release. "His statistics speak for themselves, and as a team captain he led the way you want your leaders to lead -- by example.

"I wish him the best moving forward."

Johnson's 63.5 sacks ranks second on the team's all-time list behind Julius Peppers (81). He had only one sack during the 2015 season in which he missed seven games with a hamstring injury.

I suppose this is his big cut of 2016. Last year it was DeAngelo Williams and the year before it was Steve Smith.

He has made a pile of money in his career, particularly for being merely good

Carolina has definitely overloaded on defense that they'll get this type of production for years and can clear all of these expensive guys who don't do anything.

They just need a compliment offense to capitalize. W

This is one of the last contracts from the old GM that the Panthers have finally been able to unload. The last GM really put the franchise in a messy situation with terrible contracts.

Panthers giving Charles Johnson a 1-year, $3 million deal after he turned down $6 million per year from other teams to remain in Carolina.

He had 9 tackles, 3 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles in the playoffs. He's still pretty damn good when he is healthy. His hamstrings are questionable though.
