NFL Films clearly thinks Peyton is going to retire. They put together this tribute to his many records, and had the likes of Dan Marino, Brett Favre, Fran Tarkenton, Joe Namath, Steve Young, Warren Moon, John Elway, and Dan Fouts discuss it.

They comment on his many records and what it takes to achieve them. Namath and Young say he changed the game and that Brady and Rodgers and others built off of what Manning started.

Joe Namath, "The legacy of Peyton Manning is he changed the game more than anyone I have ever seen...Peyton Manning changed the game."

Fran Tarkenton, "Nobody has played the position better than Peyton Manning."

It is a great tribute to a great QB, regardless of where you rank him among the greats.

Waste of your time. Steve says the same things I did yesterday. But he has no "support" either. Not being a dick but it really is pointless for you to watch what he says

The NFL has shite like this down to a science.

It's crazy how their marketing department is run by geniuses while public relations is run by complete idiots.

Not trying to be a dick, but lots of the stuff (though I admit I didn't read the entire thread) was just a bunch of conclusions without anything backing it up. Basically all I saw was 30 different ways to say "he changed the way the position was played".

Which is fine. I was just about to throat punch a baby if I was asked to give a reason again I gave reasons, now my reasons could be absolute shite or downright lies, but they are still a freaking reason

And those same guys will be saying the same thing on Tom Brady's film in 3 years and (probably) Aaron Rodgers' in 8 years.

And Peyton Manning will be grudgingly saying it on some kid that's currently a freshman in high school's holographic video in 25 years.

If Cam keeps playing like he did this season, and then adds a few titles, it will be him that possibly changes the position again.......

He's one QB rush away from the all-time record, right? He's tied for first right now? That's insane.

I really don't get this. Yes, he is one of the best to have ever played the position, but how did he change the way other QBs play the position? Because he became a master of film study and was able to read defenses and audible to a new play? That was done for decades, most of the QBs from the 70s & earlier called a lot of their own plays.

Perhaps a better way to say it is he took back the playcalling from the OC.

Old school QB's called all their own plays. As offenses got more complicated, the OC's took the playcalling burden off the QB. Manning is so smart and has such a high football IQ that OC's have given it back to him. They may give him guidelines to follow, but he has the authority to change anything at any time. That's not changing the game, however, because very very few can do it and be successful.

What I find amazing about the detractors is the comparisons to Tom Brady. In case they haven't noticed, the Patriots, and Brady, have adopted the techniques attributed to Manning by those who played the position at elite levels in the past. Imitation really is the sincerest form of flattery.

Damn. I wonder how many he will have at the end of his career and how long that record would stand.

Exactly. Everything they say might be true. I just want someone to take the advice of all math teachers and "show your work."

Conclusory statements without any support doesn't do much for me.

I went and compiled all pass attempt stats from 1970 to 2015 - entire NFL, top 10 pass attempt offenses, top 5 pass attempt offenses. There was a large spike in pass attempts in 1978-1980 (rule changes and extended season), a minor spike in 1995 (rule changes), and a gradual increase in pass attempts starting in 2010. I didn't see a "Peyton Manning entered the league on this date and then the league learned the benefit of a pass heavy offense" type statistic. The 2010 increase could have been a delayed result of Peyton Manning-style offense, idk.

For your review...

League Average Pass Attempts per Year - 1970 to 2015

Top 10 Average Pass Attempt Offenses per Year - 1970 to 2015

Top 5 Average Pass Attempt Offenses per Year - 1970 to 2015

I wish someone like Greg Cosell would do some comprehensive research.

Got asked to explain how Peyton Manning revolutionized the QB position. Couldn't. Got upset. Now resorting to calling people retards.

Nice.
