OOC Scheduling SEC vs. Pac12 vs B1G

So, I looked up some info regarding the media's lambasting of the SEC's week 2 OOC schedule and compared the leagues two largest critics.
Scheduling is a difficult task; often done years in advance and a of agendas need to be met. However, there are clear patterns of trying and not trying.
Here's what I found based on this year's schedule:
1. FCS teams are extremely common across the board
2. Teams schedule mid-major teams vs conferences within their geographic footprint most often
3. Regional OOC rivalries are very common in the B1G and SEC
4. Notre Dame significantly boots the Pac12 and B1Gs OOC slate based on tradition rivalries
Here are the stats:
A conference's OOC opponents by conference and average percentage that a given team will play an opponent from that conference. (eg SEC 100% of FCS means 14 games were played by 14 teams.)
SEC
Games Percent OOC
14 100% FCS
10 71% Sun Belt
8 57% CUSA
5 36% ACC
5 36% MAC
5 36% AAC
4 29% Big 12
3 21% MWC
2 14% Big 10
0 0% Pac 12
0 0% IND
11 games & 14 Teams vs. Power 5+ND
B1G
11 79% MAC
11 79% FCS
6 43% AAC
5 36% Pac 12
5 36% IND
4 29% ACC
4 29% CUSA
3 21% Big 12
3 21% MWC
2 14% SEC
2 14% Sun Belt
17 games & 14 Teams vs Power 5+ND
Pac12
12 100% MWC
8 67% FCS
5 42% Big 10
3 42% IND
2 17% ACC
1 8% Big 12
1 8% MAC
1 8% CUSA
1 8% AAC
1 8% Sun Belt
0 0% SEC
11 games & 12 teams vs Power 5+ND
Some notes
From the numbers looks like B1G schedules the best OOC games. Many are with regional rivals and Notre Dame (Michigan, Purdue, Northwestern).
The Pac 12 also has 3 games vs ND (USC, Stanford, ASU).
Every SEC team scheduled an FCS team and the next two conferences were the Sun Belt and CUSA, in their footprint. Likewise, there was and 80% chance a B1G played someone in the MAC, while 12 Pac12 games were scheduled vs 12 Mountain West Teams.
Quality Opponents
From the perspective of scheduling, it's uncertain what exactly you're going to get.
There were a total of 24 teams who finished ranked in at least 2 of the last 3 years:
'11, '12, '13:
Alabama
LSU
South Carolina
Clemson
Florida State
Nebraska
Oklahoma
Oregon
Stanford
And 14 more who were 2/3:
Vanderbilt
Georgia
Louisville
Baylor
Kansas State
Michigan
Michigan State
Notre Dame
Ohio State
Wisconsin
Oklahoma State
Texas A&M
Cincinnati
USC
Of course they can't play against themselves, so here are the games scheduled vs those teams:
SEC: 7(Clemson x2, FSU, Oklahoma, Louisville, Kansas State, Wisconsin)
B1G: 6 (LSU, Oregon, Notre Dame x3, Cincinnati).
Pac12: 5 (Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame x3).
**SEC&B1G play 4 games, Pac12 plays 3 (UW played 4)
Of course that doesn't consider what may actually unfold through the season and turn out to be quality wins.
So, if you're a committee, do you discredit the SEC's OOC scheduling?

Great point. You may schedule a team while they are a top 25 program and by the time you play they are in shambles.

Overall no...but a team like Florida not leaving the state of Florida for an OOC game since 1991 is ridiculous.

They have playedthe most and have the highest winning percentage among the power 5 conferences vs other power 5 conferences

I don't think you can discredit scheduling by conference as a whole.
Good info

Why? Are FSU and Miami not quality opponents?
Posted on 9/9/14 at 4:09 pm to TreyAnastasio
Are you saying that chart is OOC regular season games because I simply don't believe it is.

They've played Miami twice in the past decade. Try again.

I believe that quite a few SEC teams step it up for ONE OOC game a year then go back to the rent a wins. Then you have a team like Arkansas who apparently schedules no one OOC anymore.
A few teams (LSU, Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia) seem to be more willing to take on a stronger OOC schedule than the others.

what about the Pac 12 and/or B1G not winning a championship in almost 10 years now?
I don't think you can discredit the SEC for playing shitty in state schools or FCS teams. when you're in the west and have Bama, LSU, aTm, and Auburn ranked in the top 15 fairly consistently, I don't give a shite about your OOC games.

And FSU every year. What is wrong with that? Just because they don't leave the state?

Teams that played zero Power 5:
Mississippi State (USM, UAB, @USA, UT Martin)
Ole Miss (Boise State, ULL, Memphis, Presbyterian)
Vanderbilt (Temple, UMass, Charleston S, ODU)
Penn State (UCF, Akron, UMass, Temple)
Colorado (CSU @ Denver, @UMass, Hawaii)
Arizona (UNLV, @UTSA, Nevada)
Oregon St (Portland St, @Hawaii, San Diego St)

Texas A & M has finished ranked in the top 15 three times in the last 19 years. That isn't fairly consistently.
I agree with the other three. Interestingly a couple of those you mentioned are more than willing take on stronger OOC games (which you don't give a shite about).

A buckeye is whining about strength of schedule?

You can't figure it out yourself? The other 8 years it's just rent a wins.

Yea, they still play FSU though. I looked at OSU's schedule. I didn't see any world beaters on their OOC.

That's pretty much the case for everyone. I'll give OSU credit for VT and Cinci, and Navy to an extent.
Lots of Rent a wins across the board.
Arkansas plays at Texas Tech.

1/2 since joining the SEC ain't bad. 18th last year. my point is still valid.

I meant I don't care if they play shitty OOC games. if they play tough OOC games, then of course their overall body of work in a season will be more impressive, but I don't think weak OOC games takes anything away from the strength of their schedule because of their conference games.

In OM's defense, Boise St probably looked like a good game when it was scheduled.

I'm not whining. Just participating in the discussion. There are SEC teams that step up OOC and there are SEC teams (Arkansas) who schedule three cream puffs in the hopes that they will become bowl eligible.
Playing FCS teams needs to stop everywhere. Upper division teams should play upper division teams.
Who among you likes paying todays ticket prices to go to a game that isn't going to be competitive in the least? I drive over 400 miles to every Ohio State home game. I'm excited about what I see scheduled in the next decade OOC. I know they are going to lose some but so what?
Virginia Tech
Texas
Notre Dame
Oklahoma
Oregon
Oregon State
North Carolina
Boston College
TCU
North Carolina
Those are all between now and 2023. Hell yes I want to be at those games.
