The NCAA was snooping around before they beat Bama. Hugh and Co. were just too ignorant to lay low for a year or two to get the NCAA looking the other way.

USC got hammered for not participating in the investigation
it was a risky gambit
the actual violations were very minor and not even directly related to USC. if they had just taken the punishment of Bush being ineligible and some other minor bullshite i'm sure the NCAA would have been done
