I do love how it's apparently Cal as the worst offender ever with one and dones single handedly ruining all of college basketball with it. All 300+ teams.

Kentucky has had more 1 and dones than anyone else and it's not even close.

And yet, you claim it's ruining college basketball.

One single team is ruining college basketball for 300+ other teams.

But again, is Cal not supposed to recruit those guys? If they want to come here does he tell them no?

I mean if it's one and done that is ruining the game(NBA rule) then shouldn't all the coaches who recruit them be blamed for it?

Nobody said Kentucky is ruining college basketball. Everyone is saying that the 1 and done has killed the popularity of the sport, and the fact is that Kentucky relies on one and dones more than any other program.

UNC has a starting 5 of three juniors and two seniors

Yea, Carolina seems to find a good blend of players who stay 3-4 years. They really don't have as many 1 and dones as you would expect

ETA: actually they've only had 2 one and done players, Marvin Williams and Brandon wright

Yep. Roy basically picks that next tier of quality players that he can rely on to stick around and develop. Guys who played on the same AAU teams with the one and dones, but aren't guys you'd expect to be a top NBA pick in 1 year maybe not even 2 years.

Joe Forte was a 1 and done guy...not nearly as well known because he didnt do anything in the NBA.

Yeah UNC hasn't had a one and done since Brandan Wright. With Kentucky getting 5 out of the top 10 top HS players every year, its hard for other schools to get any of them. Kentucky pays them extra well for their 7 months of service.

actually he's been recruiting them like every other coach but has been missing out. ironically, his teams succeed anyway because of their cumulative experience and depth. He went hard after Brandon Ingram, for instance, and Tar Heel nation was not happy when he went to Duke. Guys like McAdoo and Jackson were potential one and dones that took more time to develop. To his credit he's done a great job finding overlooked or at least less heralded in state talent like Luke Maye.

True, but he has still successfully recruited a lot of good players a step below. I do think he has deliberately backed off some very big one-and-done names, such as John Wall, who is from NC. I think at times Roy doesn't want to get involved with some of the guys. We will see, they missed out on a good bit in this class, but Raymond Felton's brother should be a decent player coming in. They'll be good in backcourt for the next few years, just need to get some frontcourt guys, which has been the staple of any UNC success.

Youre right to an extent. He definitely doesn't cast the wide net that Calipari and lately K do. Whatever he's doing, it's working.

It's a double edged sword for me with Roy's tactics. While I agree it works for them long term, in the short term next year they will be hurting. They are losing some big pieces for next years team, and it will take some time for the younger guys to step up. This is how its been in recent years. But it pays off, 2 back to back final fours, and possible NC for NC. I'll take it.

Agreed. They'll basically be very thin underneath. Assuming Bradley stays...which I think is probable...I have no clue who would start next to him...the guard position should be more than fine. I'm guessing you'd still have Joel Berry around...with Seventh Woods, Kenny Williams and Jalek Felton. Theo stays....so you have a pretty good starting 4, but who plays next to Bradley? Bradley is going to have to make a big leap.

they have a couple of three star post players coming in and could very likely get Kevin Knox. One thing that Roy does well is depth. His teams are able to wear out their opponents. Not many college teams have a rotation of 10 people. He's able to keep these players satisfied with 5-10 minutes a game because in addition to 5 star prospects like Jackson and Hicks, he's been steadily recruiting lower tier prospects who don't have lofty expectations of playing time and are content with starting small and putting in basic minutes. Coach K has actually been trying to do this to an extent lately because hes been bitten by the transfer bug due to his small rotations, which is why youre seeing him extend offers to no names like Antonio Vrankovic and Jack White. But Roy has mastered it.
