Wish my iPad wasn't pissing me off today. I can't believe the season long thread is only 2 pages. Ferrari needs some team orders or they'll end up beating themselves.

Too bad they're staying with the v-6 formula, but most of the teams seem to be in favor of it.

Great drive by Lewis Hamilton. He has now won 9 of the last 11 races (coming in 2nd the other two times). He was in complete control throughout the race. Not sure if Kimi would have passed him if there were a few more laps with the Mercedes nursing brake problems towards the end there.

My thoughts on the season so far:

1. Mercedes has a clear advantage in qualifying over one lap.

2. Ferrari are only a few tenths slower than the Mercedes in race trim. But in hotter conditions Ferrari seem to have the advantage when it comes to managing the tires. Looks like in cooler climates Mercedes will have the upper hand and Ferrari will be the favorites in hotter races.

3. Lewis Hamilton has it dialed in at the moment. He is driving better than he ever has in his career. I think he is driving now knowing that he is clearly the better driver between him and Rosberg. Last year he was on the back foot only because of reliability issues. But this year he has shown that if he has a reliable car under him, he will more often than not beat his teammate.

I think Kimi would have caught him even without the brake problems but passing him is a different matter unless Lewis made a mistake (unlikely). Also the brake issue sounded like a one-time thing. Hamilton said that he had an issue going into that one turn but he changed a setting and the problem never reappeared.

I'm glad to see Ferrari putting some pressure on Mercedes. I think it's a given that Hamilton will be world champion again this year but somebody needs to challenge them. Ferrari is starting to do that. I also agree with you that the Ferrari chassis seems to protect the tires better. It will be interesting to see how that plays out as spring turns to summer.

I was disappointed in Vettel. He seemed off his game for some reason. He let Rosberg go around him twice, almost without a fight. Lucky for the Scuderia that Kimi stepped up.

Spanish GP - Hamilton fastest in Free Practice 2. Vettel is 2nd. Rosberg is 3rd. Button was a surprise at 7th in the McLaren.

BTW, I came across this video on YouTube. It seems like Alonso and Lewis may have buried the hatchet from the infamous 2007 season they had together at McLaren. Here is Alonso going over to Hamilton's garage to congratulate him after winning the WDC last year. It is obvious that they both have an enormous respect for each other -

LINK

p.s. I always thought Alonso was a bit of a whiner and a sore loser. But looks like he has changed a lot as he as gotten older. I have a new found respect for him. I hope he can win at least one more WDC at McLaren before he retires. He has two more seasons left in his contract at McLaren after the current one.

Rosberg wins the Spanish GP. Important psychological win for him, I think. Injects some excitement back into the championship at the top between him and Hamilton.

But it was disappointing to see Vettel 47 seconds down on Rosberg in 3rd place. After all Ferrari was supposed to be strong on this circuit which suited their car apparently.

McLaren disappointed as usual with Alonso retiring and Button finishing in 16th place. The McLaren-Honda team have much work to do if they plan to win a WDC for Alonso in his two remaining seasons there after this one.

Result
1 Nico Rosberg Mercedes 1:41.12.555
2 Lewis Hamilton Mercedes 17.5

6 Felipe Massa Williams 80.3
7 Daniel Ricciardo Red Bull 1 LAP
8 Romain Grosjean Lotus 1 LAP

Very disappointing. Ferrari were supposed to have found some horsepower to make them more competitive with the Silver Arrows. I didn't see much difference. It's still Mercedes and then everybody else. At least we've got some competition between Nico & Lewis.

Oh boy, favorite race of the year this weekend.

Monaco!

For those that have never seen one, if you only see one race this is the one to see!

Every seat sold out. Even the $3,100 terrace. Probably more billionaires make this event that May/Pac and will be a million times more exciting!

Lewis Hamilton signs new contract—Mercedes only confirms contract length of 3 years, but not amount.

Paul Weaver at the Guardian reports a £100 million (USD $154 million) contract as if he really knows the number. Toto Wolff says some of the contract estimates are "nonsense." However, given the size of F1 budgets and Hamilton's great performance at Mercedes, as well as Vettel's contract, This number is probably in the ball park. A salary of $51 million per year would put him only behind Lionel Messi among highest paid athletes. You know, if you believe drivers are athletes.

Lewis Hamilton is on pole for Monaco. He was a massive .342 seconds ahead of his team mate Rosberg who came in second. He was .751 seconds faster than Vettel's 3rd placed Ferrari.

Can't believe this is his first pole at the hallowed circuit in 9 attempts, especially for someone like him that is such a great qualifier. Lewis now has 43 poles in his career, just two behind Vettel who is in third place at 45 poles. Ahead of them are Michael Schumacher with 68 poles and Ayrton Senna at 65 pole positions.

Did you say the same thing when Red Bull and Vettel won 4 championships in a row? Everything goes in cycles in Formula 1. It is good to see Hamilton fighting for championships consistently at Mercedes. He never got the chance at McLaren except his first two seasons there. He is one of the best drivers currently on the grid, if not the best, and deserves his chance at the top. Eventually it will be someone else.

Don't get me wrong. I will still be watching.

When Vettel won his four in a row, two of them came down to the end between him and Alonso.

It would be nice to see different teams fighting it out for pole because different tracks suit them. As it is, Mercedes clearly have the superior car, so it is really a two man fight between Rosberg and Hamilton. I think Hamilton will win that battle again this year.

Cheers, and thanks for the thread.

It's irritating that we saw 4 consecutive Red Bull championships and after they change the formula, Mercedes, formerly a non-factor, now cannot lose. We haven't seen a real season long competition in a while.

Still, there is nothing like this race. I've got my traditional Monaco breakfast right now - caviar with blinis, sour cream, red onions and egg whites, some fruit and mimosas. It's going to be exciting (I hope).

Starting grid.

01 Lewis Hamilton
02 Nico Rosberg
03 Sebastian Vettel
04 Daniel Ricciardo
05 Daniil Kvyat
06 Kimi Raikkonen
07 Sergio Perez
08 Carlos Sainz Jr.
09 Pastor Maldonado
10 Max Verstappen
11 Jenson Button
12 Nico Hulkenberg
13 Felipe Massa
14 Fernando Alonso
15 Felipe Nasr
16 Romain Grosjean
17 Valtteri Bottas
18 Marcus Ericsson
19 Will Stevens
20 Roberto Merhi

It's always been a dream of mine to watch the race some way like that.

ETA: Well, that was quick. 2.5 seconds already, and 2 years ago, they couldn't buy a win. Thank god for whiny V-6's.
