quote:

On November 12, 1996, Allen Iverson dropped 35 on the Knicks in a win at the Garden.

On November 12, 1996, I played five minutes and finished with two points in a Lakers win at Houston.

When I checked into my hotel room later that night and saw the 35 on SportsCenter, I lost it. I flipped the table, threw the chairs, broke the TV.

quote:

On March 19, 1999, Iverson put 41 points and 10 assists on me in Philadelphia.

Working harder wasn’t enough.

I had to study this man maniacally.

I obsessively read every article and book I could find about AI. I obsessively watched every game he had played, going back to the IUPU All-American Game. I obsessively studied his every success, and his every struggle. I obsessively searched for any weakness I could find.

You'd have to read the rest of the article then. He goes on to talk about how he dropped 50 on him and he scored 0.

This reads like Magic studying and being obsessed with Bird after 1984.

You can't be serious. Dude said he studied sharks so he could better guard AI.

That was a pretty shitty article. I was hoping it would be longer...

I mean it's not a piece by Bob Woodward, but I thought it was fine.

Sounds dumb as frick. Sharks have nothing to do with guarding the most unguardable player ever. I like Kobe but that shite is dumb.

I guess. He pointed to how it related. Patience, timing, angles...all something important when guarding a player.

Not sure what's dumb about it.

You can say the same thing about most any predator. He just wanted to seem more awesome and his cult followers will latch on (as we're witnessing here) and others will view his statements as ridiculous and attention-seeking.

He was saying that was his mentality. He didn't actually drop 50 while AI went scoreless. He said there was a game where AI had 16 at half and finished the game with 16. Kobe had 18 in that game.

If you say so. Still missing on how it's dumb. Did he say only sharks hunt with patience, timing, and angles?

I guess I'm a cult follower for not seeing how it's dumb. Cool.

Looks like Kobe was 1 of last ofva dying breed. The $ is too stupid now / guaranteed.

Not many have the incentive for greatness. It's much easier to join the team that beat you & get the edge of addition by subtraction.

RIP gym rats Kobe, Duncan, Dirk

I wish more players had this mentality I hated him back in the day but nothing but respect now.
