Not Long Ago, Art Briles Didn't Think Head-to-Head Mattered

In 2008, Oklahoma and Texas were embattled in a jockeying to be ranked higher in the BCS. The team ranked highest in the BCS would break a three-way tie atop the Big 12 south, advance to the Big 12 title game, and, with a win there, to the national championship.

The polling was so close that every vote in the Coaches and Harris polls counted. Every vote mattered.

And Baylor coach Art Briles strangely voted Oklahoma No. 1 and had Texas all the way down at No. 5, even though the Longhorns defeated the Sooners head-to-head.

This season, Briles is in the middle of his own head-to-head debate. The Bears have been slotted lower than TCU in the playoff rankings, even though they beat the Horned Frogs last month.

Monday, Briles was asked how he could vote Texas behind OU while also reconciling that his team deserved to be ahead of TCU in the playoff rankings.

Turned out, Briles said he didn't vote at all.

"I've always been taught to tell the truth," Briles said on the Big 12 coaches teleconference, "and I didn't vote on that poll. I passed it on to somebody in the office."

With so much at stake for the Big 12 in 2008, I don't buy for one second that his final ballot went out without him approving of what was on it, regardless of who filled it out. Some coaches might not take much interest in the meaningless mid-season ballots, but they all take interest in the end-season ballots. Claiming to be derelict in his duties doesn't excuse his hypocrisy.

I think Baylor should be ahead of TCU(I think I think OSU should be ahead of both), but bitch move by Briles. He probably did pass it on, but he should own it since his name is attached to it. If he didn't think it was worthy of being taken seriously because his team was not in it in '08, then he really has to wear whatever criticism he gets now. And I'm sure he will. His job is not to be fair or consistent, it is to take up for his team. The committee should not hold it against him or even consider what he did 6 years ago. But the media(rightly) should.'and if they get left out, he should wear it.

This is dumb.

The 2008 B12 had a 3-way tie among Texas, Oklahoma and Texas Tech for the division with all three owning a loss and win over each other. Someone was going to get voted behind a team they beat head-to-head. Briles did probably vote strategically to ensure his major in-state competitor didn't get a chance to play for a title, but that neither compares to this current situation nor discredits his argument for Baylor getting into the playoffs over TCU.

You're conveniently ignoring the fact that Texas Tech had two losses, so they weren't even part of the discussion, just like West Virginia isn't part of the discussion today, despite beating Baylor. Texas and Oklahoma both had one loss, just like Baylor and TCU today, so the debate was always between them only. What's dumb is thinking a two-loss Texas Tech could have ever been ranked higher than a one-loss Texas or Oklahoma.

No, they didn't. TT had one loss at the time the ballot was cast. Just like Oklahoma and just like Texas. Both OU and TT lost their bowl games to get their second loss on the year. This was a big deal back in 2008 because the BCS was the tiebreaker for the division.

Put Ohio State in over TCU and Baylor and problem solved.

Then openly state that the committee had the opportunity to select a major conference champion over a bg XII co champ.

that will solve this problem moving forward.

It's no surprise, other coaches have admitted the same thing. Why it's a joke compared to the AP.

I stand corrected. Texas Tech beat Texas but got blown out by Oklahoma. I must have confused 2008 with something from another year.

Maybe he had Texas 5 because they lost to Tech and he had OU at 1 because they beat Tech.
