At the annual meeting of NBA general managers Wednesday in Chicago, there was no overwhelming consensus to change the rules to discourage teams from intentionally fouling poor free-throw shooters, league sources told CBSSports.com.

“There is not enough support to change it,” one executive in the meeting said. “It’s one of those perception is bigger than reality issues.”

It’s worth noting that this will still be discussed by the competition committee during its July meeting in Las Vegas, and it may still be recommended that the rules need to be changed. But it’s far from a consensus at this point, at least in the early stages of discussion.

Good.

Learn to shoot free throws. Teams will quit.

Why not let team that is fouled have choice on whether to shoot free throws or take ball in? I know this has been suggested. What is feeling about that?

Yea, and they probably won't until there's some sort of proof that doing so would increase league revenue.

I'd be on board. Seems like the most logical fix and it doesn't require any major changes to the rules.

This would extremely limit comebacks late in the game due to fouling.

Good point. Didn't think about that.

Agreed. I've said as much on here.

This has nothing to do with bailing out poor shooters. This is about making the game more entertaining. I'm on board.

Not necessarily. Getting the option to just keep the ball would only be available outside of 2 minutes.

If you're fouling to come back with more that 2 minutes remaining, you've already lost.

No it wouldn't. The rule is only in effect for off-ball fouls away from the play.

It would have no effect on the on-ball fouls at the end of games.

Someone who watches a little more NBA than I do can correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't some portion of the "hack-a-Shaq" fouls committed away from the ball? If they aren't already, those should be counted as intentional fouls giving the opponent 2 shots and the ball. Hell, if you want, treat it almost like a technical foul where the FT shooter is chosen by the shooting team.

On ball fouls are still fair game though. If you don't like it, learn to make your FTs.

I'm sorry, but EVERY bad FT shooter is a guy who simply doesn't care enough to work to make himself a better FT shooter. For some it will take much more work than others, but EVERY NBA player can become at least an adequate FT shooter

Some guys are just bad FT shooters. I know that is hard to believe, but it's true. If you think Deandre Jordan is not actually trying to be a better shooter, idk what to tell you.

There is often confusion as to what "hack-a-Shaq" is. People seem to confuse that with the fouling at the end of games to put the guy with the ball on the free throw line in the final minute or two when your team is losing.

That isn't what hack-a-Shaq is.

Hack-a-Shaq is always done off the ball. It is often done in any random quarter.... first quarter, second quarter, etc. Doesn't matter.

Many teams do it even while they are winning.

They will foul a bad free throw shooter (like Shaq) when he doesn't have the ball. They will often foul him when he's jogging up the court after he passed the ball in.

And they keep doing it over and over and over again each time down the floor.

That's hack-a-Shaq.

I kind of imagine it being similar to me trying to throw one of those volleyball sized light balls in between the toy aisles at Wal Mart into a smaller, lower rim.

That's what it must feel like for someone with the muscle mass and hand size of DJ/Howard/Shaq.

I don't think that's it. Plenty of big guys can shoot free throws.

I can shoot free throws just fine even with one of those mini basketballs.

I imagine it would be like me shooting left-handed. Feels awkward, and I'd have no control.

This. For some people it is just mental. They are fine at practice, but shooting in front of millions messes with their heads.
