This isn't so much a soccer thread as much as it is a NOLA trying to get another major sporting event thread... thus why I'm posting it here since discussion on it has already started on the soccer board as well

the US women's national team already played 1 match in the Superdome and just recently announced another in the coming weeks

would be awesome to see the Superdome for 1 of the biggest events in international sports

The Bid Committee plans to include 20-25 venues in its final bid to FIFA. If selected to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup™, subject to FIFA’s determination, it is anticipated that at least 12 locations could ultimately serve as Official Host Cities. If a city is not selected to host matches, there may be other opportunities to be involved in the 2026 FIFA World Cup™. Those cities, as well as other cities not on the initial list, could be selected as the location for the International Broadcast Center, host Team Base Camps or host major events such as the Preliminary or Final Draw.

I'd be mildly surprised if the Superdome is still standing in 2026...

as they all fit the 40K+ seating requirement

Jerry World's got to be an early favorite for the Final if the united North America bid wins out

Unless you think it will be wiped out by a natural disaster or terrorist attack there's pretty much a zero percent chance it gets replaced by a new stadium

There already talking about MAJOR renovations that will cost 100s of millions to start in the 2020s to keep the building viable. Should have multiple plans out in the next year or so.

also... I think FIFA has some natural grass mandate for all World Cup facilities...

the Pontiac Silverdome brought in natural grass for the 1994 World Cup

Saints played the Packers in a preseason game on grass in the Superdome in 1999

so not something exactly foreign... though it has been a while

They played the WWC completely on Perfect Turf in Canada. So not sure it is a mandate or just a recommendation?

That's just because FIFA doesn't care about the women's game.

70k expandable to 100k for major events. Don't ask me to explain that because I don't understand it.
