Yeah, I was in a little bit of a freakout mode with those first two losses. Nice turnaround. Blashill seems dopey to me, but I have a relative pretty well connected in coaching circles and says he's very solid.

I was in full meltdown mode after the loss to Florida.
I know Zetterberg is the captain, but he needs to move down a line or two. He does not need to be the forward with the most ice time.

Montreal #1 in TSN power rankings
so right. way too early. Let's see how it shakes out over time. We've barely gotten started. Here are the top 5.
1. MONTREAL CANADIENS 4-0-1 THIS WEEK: 1 LAST WEEK: 9 GF: 4.00 GA: 1.60 SA CF%: 53.7 PP%: 14.3 PK%: 92.0 The Habs made do early while Carey Price was ill, but they’ve been scoring from the jump. Their big offseason acquisition, D Shea Weber, is tied for the team lead with five points while struggling mightily in terms of possession (43.8 CF%, -3.8 CFRel%). Key Injuries: None.
2. WASHINGTON CAPITALS 3-1-1 THIS WEEK: 2 LAST WEEK: 1 GF: 2.60 GA: 1.80 SA CF%: 56.3 PP%: 12.5 PK%: 71.4 Saturday’s loss to the Rangers was Washington’s first regulation loss of the season. While none of the Capitals have opened with a big scoring surge, they’ve been a strong possession team and, as a result, they have allowed just four goals against during 5-on-5 play, the only team to allow less than one goal per game at evens. Key Injuries: None.
3. FLORIDA PANTHERS 3-1-1 THIS WEEK: 3 LAST WEEK: 15 GF: 3.20 GA: 2.20 SA CF%: 57.4 PP%: 11.1 PK%: 90.9 Injuries decimated Florida’s forward ranks right from the start of the season, yet they’ve received great production from Jonathan Marchessault, who has seven points in five games while taking Huberdeau’s spot on the top line. Key Injuries: LW Jonathan Huberdeau (Achilles), C Nick Bjugstad (hand).
4. TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING 4-1-0 THIS WEEK: 4 LAST WEEK: 5 GF: 3.20 GA: 2.80 SA CF%: 54.0 PP%: 26.3 PK%: 92.3 The Lightning have an exceptional line-up and the one blemish on their record was a 4-0 loss to Colorado in which Tampa Bay allowed just 16 shots on goal; this even while they wait for Nikita Kucherov’s first goal and for D Anton Stralman to get back on top of his typically strong possession game. Key Injuries: RW Ryan Callahan (hip). Embedded Image The Oilers are off to a good start and shut out the Jets at the Heritage Classic.
5. EDMONTON OILERS 5-1-0 THIS WEEK: 5 LAST WEEK: 23 GF: 3.83 GA: 2.67 SA CF%: 49.4 PP%: 16.7 PK%: 87.0 The Oilers are looking pretty good early in the year, though their schedule has been a little favourable in this small sample. Nevertheless, Connor McDavid has been electrifying, putting up nine points (4 G, 5 A) in six games and doing it with style. Key Injuries: D Brandon Davidson (lower body), D Mark Fayne (undisclosed).

The Montreal Canadiens have jumped to the top in the season’s first update of the TSN.ca NHL Power Rankings. Last season, the Habs started hot, and they’re doing it again this year, with a strong possession game complemented by an elite goaltender and, early on, a hot shooting streak which has them with a heavily regression-worthy 108.6 PDO. Understanding that, when all teams have played four to six games, the sample sizes are ridiculously small, the rankings will take some time to settle into something manageable (and teams stop rolling with a 108.6 PDO), but I like applying the early season stats and letting the teams find their level as the sample size increases. It just means that over the next month or so, there is more room for dramatic swings from week to week.

This early, I care a lot more about process than results. I mean, results are good of course, but I want the underlying play to be there for when luck begins to even out over the long haul.
Pretty happy with the Caps play except on the penalty kill, which may just be the function of poor luck. But the Tre Kronor line is so much damned fun.

Yeah we still need improvement down the middle. Need to move plekanec to third line. Trade for a second line center. Keep chucky on first and Mitchell on 4th. Desharnais may have to go. He's currently our third line center. Pleks is a great penalty killer but his scoring has dropped and isn't dependable in playoffs to score goals. We need a better playmaker between radulov and lehkonen
