I thought this was interesting, even though it's from 2014. It's an NFL map based on majority allegiance county, using social media. It has been called "the most comprehensive sample of sports fanhood ever collected". You can learn more about their methodology here: io9

A couple of interesting observations jump out:

-Why the Cowboys love in Nevada and southern Idaho?
-The Rams have a woefully small fan base. I figured they'd have a larger share of the Midwest.
-South Carolina has serious fan identity issues.
-I can see now why the Bills management wants to move to Toronto. They are sandwiched by two dominant fanbases (Steelers and Giants).

Apparently not enough to be the majority in any one county. They are unique in that they are dominated by the Giants geographically.

Why? They suck and are surrounded by other teams

Old South Carolinians who were fans of teams before the Panthers. As you can see, big Steelers presence -- basically a bunch of bandwagon fans.

Since it is based upon online presence, the ones that are smart/rich enough to get online are. Those that aren't are likely Falcon fans.

No local team, and several regional teams to divide up the loyalty (49ers, Raiders, Chargers, Cardinals, old time Rams fans, maybe some Broncos in there). The team for each county is a plurality so you could have fans of enough different teams and a national brand like Dallas takes it.

I noticed Shelby County (Memphis) isn't Titans country. Probably mad that they wanted a team for all that time and then they get used by Nashville.

This was the map based on Facebook date - where people were posting about their favorite teams.

Had this map been made in the 90s, all of AZ would have been Cowboys fans too.
