NFL insider John "The Professor" Clayton is leaving ESPN as part of the sweeping layoffs at the Worldwide Leader in Sports, sources tell Sporting News. ESPN and Clayton both declined comment. The well-respected Clayton has served as a senior NFL writer and commentator at ESPN for 23 years.

Hopefully he tours with Slayer now

That commercial is still ESPN's best original programming other than 30 for 30.

It's clear ESPN hates sports at this point. They're axing all their insider reporters. I'm sure Jemele Hill and Steven A can get us the inside scoop from NFL general managers though..

These guys aren't necessary for ESPN. The story is going to be reported on / broken regardless. Let someone else carry the cost.

ESPN is going the way of the original MTV. It's becoming less and less necessary to have ESPN if you just want to watch games. The leagues, via streaming, the internet, et al. will be able to provide the public with games without having to go through ESPN which is basically just a middle-man. Just like MTV realized it could no longer survive (especially in the age of the internet) just by showing music videos, ESPN will only be able to survive if they create original content. Clayton is an old-school reporter who could go on Sportcenter, NFL Countdown, etc and give us the news no one else could get. Now, we don't have to watch NFL Countdown to get the breaking news of the day. It's on the internet a millisecond after it breaks.

ESPN is what MTV was 25 years ago...now look at it. Bring back CNN Sports Tonight with Vince Cheleni.

I don't believe that for a second.

This makes him dispensable.

This. But like you said, ESPN is becoming just like MTV. It'll start creating reality shows and other crap viewing with sports games mixed in.
