The crystal football was awesome. Not sure why they needed to change the trophy just because the format changed.

Downgrade.
Crystal football was the second-best trophy in all of sports behind the Stanley Cup.
ETA: I don't think it's "horrible" though. It's still better than the rest of the NCAA Championship trophies (though I think that's not saying much).
