The spot stays vacant for the remainder of the year then it is filled with the incoming class of plebes. This goes for anyone that quits or is told to leave.

It’s not the NFL it is the US Congress, and the way it works now is they don”t get released from their commitment. It is deferred until their professional athletic career is over.
Student loans being forgiven early is an actual release from a commitment.

Seems like a lot throughout this thread are confusing delaying mandatory service versus eliminating mandatory service component.

At this point he cant just leave the academy to prepare for the draft. When you attend your first class your junior year you are now committed to Uncle Sam. If he leaves the academy before graduation he will be reassigned to a regular Army unit as an enlisted soldier.

Okay, but here's the thing. At West Point, you can quit/transfer/whatever before the start of your junior year without owing anything. He's an idiot for going through Affirmation if his #1 dream was to play in the NFL. At that point he should've transferred, graduated, and could eventually commission later on via OCS.

Does Affirmation also include the 8 year obligation (5 active + 3 IRR) after graduating?
I still can't get an answer on whether or not Spencer Rapone had to pay back everything after he was kicked out.

Or…maybe he loves West Point, wanted to be a West Point grad given he’d already put in 50% of the work, and believed he could go to the NFL first since that has been an option up until now?
Do we even know if he looked like an NFL prospect at the end of his second year? Looking at his 2020 stats, it seems like he wasn’t even starting.
The expectation seems to be that he should have been able to see into the future where this bill passes and he develops into an NFL prospect.

But…it’s not. He still wants to serve his commitment. The exact same number of officers end up serving if he goes to the NFL first.
Even if that wasn’t true, I’m sure the Army accounts for attrition in the commissioning sources…they can open up an additional OCS spot next year for every Academy/ROTC cadet who doesn’t commission.

He made a commitment based on the rules in place, which are now being changed after the fact.
