Sandusky was given credit for the upset NC win over Miami. He was carried off the field. He was the reason why Penn St. was LBU. He was an integral part of Joe Paterno's success at Penn St--more than pretty much anyone else.
But it was Sandusky's coaching that was an integral part of the program, not his child molestation.

They swept a fricking shitstorm of child rape under the rug. That is how it helped them win. Recruits had zero idea they were signing up to play for JoePedo. Would it have made a difference? Absolutely. I was a recruited college athlete, and I certainly wouldn't have signed up for playing for such a "leader."
This makes no sense at all. Some of you folks seem to be thinking with emotion rather than logic. It's self-evident how Sandusky's behavior could have hurt the team if he had been found out while he was still coaching, but it in no way helped the team.
EDIT: Let's not forget that Sandusky left the program in 1999, but the NCAA vacated all of Penn State's wins from 2000 through 2011. What sense does that make?

wow, you seriously don't get it. see "fricking shitstorm" in bold. when this story broke, it was more than sports news, more than national news, this was actually global news. systematic child molestation taking place at a revered american university by someone really high up the food chain, for years and years. let that sink in, and fricking shitstorm might not even be strong enough to describe it. I understand that the cover up was a major part of the story as well, but had paterno or someone else originally reported it years ago, its still national news and a fricking shitstorm. while the ncaa sanctions wouldn't have occurred if sandsuky was reported, there is still a decent chance that paterno and others resign due to shame. sandusky wasn't just some water boy with loose ties to the program, he was joe's right hand man for decades. it would still be an epic black eye on the football program and they would have lost their best recruits to other schools. not to mention the fact that it was swept under the rug in order to preserve the status of the football program. you seriously think they still have their second best team in like 25 years, the 2005 one loss team, a few years removed from that scandal?
additionally, from 2000-2004 penn st had 1 winning season and 4 losing seasons, and there was plenty of talk those years of the game passing joepa by and him stepping down. Add a child molestation scandal to that and joe pa doesn't make it past 2002 imo.

I wonder if Penn St is going to put up that bronze statue of Paterno back up.
would make for another bizarre footnote to these strange and unfortunate incidents up there.

Taking away football victories because of off the field issues is about as nonsensical as an unsportsmanlike penalty costing a team 15 yards instead of forcing the player who caused the infraction to sit out a certain number of plays.
I can see vacating the records of steroid users as they cheated to attain them. JoePa, despite being an absolute horrible person whom I loathe, did not cheat to get those wins.

so how do you feel about players getting paid by boosters, agents, etc ?

I think players should be able to make money if what they are doing isn't criminal. This is America after all. Major college sports haven't been 'amateur' in quite some time.
