I know swimming is not a hot sport on this board, but for those who have experience in the sport, this is pretty significant news.

The NCAA has unveiled a sweeping set of new events and rules for the 2015-2016 college swimming season that will be among the most fundamentally-transforming changes in recent history.

The NCAA on Thursday announced 5 new rules changes:

Synchronized diving approved for dual and invitational meets to replace any springboard or platform event.
Backstroke starting wedges approved
100 IM approved for inclusion at conference championship meets (though it isn’t required).
Removing requirement to separate hands before taking dolphin kick on breaststroke pullout
Requirement for allowing strobe lights for deaf or hearing-impaired swimmers.

UCLA dropped their men's swim team due to Title IX in 1994...California is the dominant west coast team. The SEC - UGA, Auburn and Florida - have turned into the major players in swimming...and Texas.

They've changed this rule so many times I never knew what was legal and what wasn't, and I was a breaststroker

FINA changed the rule Nov. 2014 and now the NCAA is adopting this interpretation. I never had the ability to do this and always get pissed when a record of mine is broken. That extra dolphin kick is definitely worth a good .25 second.

100 IM

You've got to be shitting me... college swimming caters enough to sprinters. I've been a huge proponent of the 800 medley relay or the 800 I.M. relay, all doing a 200 im.

I just don't care enough about diving to address their change.

How so? I wish we had the 50s for all events. It would be good for the sport keeping people in it if they could do sprint events. Most swimmers leave the sport jumping into 13-14 when the 50s are replaced by 200s. I think for a fan, it's more exciting watching a 20 second event than a 15 minute event. Even coaches prefer meets seeing heats of 50 Frees than 200 Breaststrokes...and this coming from a swimmer whose best event was the 200 IM.

The rest of the world does 50s, I don't know why we're so reluctant to add them.

Yeah, I am aware. That is obviously a 1650 Free reference. The point is still the same. Adding the 50s will increase enrollment in the sport and make it more fan-friendly. More events allows a more diverse group of athletes to continue participation which only grows the sport.
