NBA to start putting sponsor logos on jerseys starting in 2017

The NBA announced Friday that the board of governors has approved a three-year pilot program to allow teams to sell a corporate logo on their jerseys.
Teams can now start pitching companies on buying a 2.5-inch-by-2.5-inch space as the NBA becomes the first of the four major U.S. sports leagues to put ads on regular game-day jerseys.
The first season of the program will be in 2017-18, which will also be the first season that Nike makes the NBA's uniforms after taking over from Adidas. The Adidas logo is not currently on game jerseys.

The sad thing is that this isn't going to lower ticket prices at all.

The money will be counted as basketball-related income and, therefore, split with the players. What isn't yet clear is how a team will resolve a conflict if a company buying a patch is a competitor of a company that endorses that team's star player.

I'm sure they'll use that ad revenue to make the game better or lower ticket prices

So the biggest question was who will get to choose the ads. The league Or does each team just go on its own. Seems the latter. Will be interesting to see Pels cooked by Zararans, spiced by Tony's

Or trim the # of commercials

That's fine if it means LESS commercials. That's how soccer rolls.

Why? Is this really needed?

Yeah this is one of those things I really don't understand the outrage about this unless NBA jerseys start to look like Nascar jacket.

I understand the outrage plenty, tbh. And I agree with it. Don't like it a bit. Don't want Spurs jerseys having ads for H-E-B on them. And I love H-E-B
But I understand why the league is making this move, and as a marketing guy I can't fault them a bit.

I guess it is because of my soccer fandom tbh.
I bought 3 jerseys this year with Fly Emirates across the front in big arse letters. I'm not gonna really care if the next Grizzlies jersey I get has a small Fedex logo on the opposite side of the Nike swoosh.

Makes sense from that perspective.
A couple of Aussie friends of mine who visited me recently said that they liked how "clean" the American sports jerseys look because their pro sports unis are littered with ads.
Guess the grass is always greener

There's going to be a huge market for knock-offs without the corporate logos on them.

Why am I getting downvoted for sharing news?

This is how it starts. One reason why Americans will never embrace soccer as a big 4 is because you can't identify who the hell is playing non-national team games just by the uniforms anymore. You walk into a sports bar and look up at the tvs and you can tell in the big 4 who is playing who with relative ease. Not with soccer. Why is Qatar Airways playing some German bank?
But the NBA is a new money kind of league so they'll try anything to make another buck.

The National team jerseys are more confusing than the club jerseys with Nike basically using a template right now for every country
I only really got in to the sport on a club level 3 years ago and it is easy as hell to tell who is playing who tbh.

It's 2016. We've been able to tell which boxer is who just by the color of their shorts since we had color TV's. Just look at the box where the score is.
You'd have to be some sort of special to not figure out who is playing from an image like this
