Unless the NBA thinks of a genius plan to radically reconfigure the salary cap, this trend is only going to get worse. Fans are starting to tune out of the regular season, which is the majority of revenue.

What trend? NBA is bringing in over a billion more than what they brought in last year. Quit talking out your arse. Regular season TV viewership isn't just an NBA problem and playoff ratings are up.

I find it very hard to believe that this year's playoffs are having good viewing numbers. Not saying that it isn't true but hard to imagine that people are actually keeping the TV tuned in for these non competitive games

I agree, but the numbers are the numbers. I haven't watched a game yet FWIW.

27 teams x 82 games = somewhere in the ballpark of 2,400 games. Subtract a few from the 3 teams whose ratings are up that play those teams & you can knock a few off that #... let's call it 2,350 for arguments' sake.

The revenue of those 2,000 + games w/ less interest far outweighs the 16 wins a team needs for a title. The Warriors & Cavs may lose a couple games, boosting that # a few. There are 8 series in first rd, 4 in thd 2nd, 2 in Finals.

8 series x 7 game hypothetical = 56 possible playoff games
4 x 7 = 28
2 x 7 = 14
1 x 7 = 7

56+ 28 + 14 + 7 = 105 max possible playoff games

Most series weren't going 7 games, so then you have 2,350 negatively affected games up against easily less than 80 games total in the playoffs.

2,350 vs 80 - those are legit ballpark #s that show the issue long term if fans begin getting accustomed to expect their favorite players to bolt for their rivals at the 1st opportunity.

KD raised the bar on the precedent Lebron started with taking the best players off of the playoff competition to a terrible level.

Of course the fans who historically enjoyed watching bball, but tuned out of the 2,000+ game regular season are going to watch some bball , causing an uptick in playoff viewership.

We're also getting less games, & more blowouts, so many of the extra fans who tuned in likely tuned back out b/c of the blowouts.

Why do you think the rigging this year was for BOS & LA? The NBA is trying to do member-berries on the lost viewer trying to draw them back in, before the trend avalanches

Dwight Howard needs to go full Worm and pierce everything sticking out of his face and dye his hair. Isaiah Thomas needs to punch a fan. These things will fix the NBA.

Nah. If you waited this long to move it you might as well hang onto it so you have something to wear again when you jump back on their bandwagon in 2038.

So the poster you initially replied to was correct.

Not reading all that shite.

ETA: Although I have to point out that your math is dogshit. To get the total NBA games in a season, you don't multiply 30 by 82. But that's neither here nor there. Carry on with your regular season argument.

You're doing an awful lot of posting about the regular season in an NBA playoff thread.

Just think.....In a perfect world, OKC would be going up 2-1 after a big game from their All NBA duo.

It's illogical that a less competitive playoffs in 2017 is getting more viewers than 2016....

...Unless the viewers that tuned out of the regular season who still wanted their bball fix added to the playoff #s. That was the relevance of the reg season in the thread

You really believe the raw #s that more ppl are watching the playoffs in its entirety?

It's more plausible fans are tuning out in the 2nd of 3rd qtr for most of these blowouts. What reason do either of you think is causing a ratings jump in a shite playoffs? Serious

Stephen A. Smith is the most hardcore shill for the NBA working for ESPN, & even he is tuning out of the playoffs, & that's his JOB!
quote:

In this postseason, Cavs games and Warriors games have become predictable blowouts.

And while it may be leading to a very entertaining NBA Finals between Curry and James that fans have been anticipating all year, these preliminary playoff games haven’t been very watchable (outside of the Boston-Washington series in Round 2). So is this good for the NBA? ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith doesn’t think so.

“Overall you’re just absolutely disgusted,” Smith said. “I cut off (Friday’s) game midway through the second quarter....I ran out of the house and got some White Castle (hamburgers)....and watched some of my General Hospital TiVo’s episodes. I don’t have time to watch this. It’s a disgrace and it’s embarrassing...The NBA should be ashamed of the product that’s been put out there...There’s so much sub par basketball.”

SAS tuning out of playoffs

quote:

Yet, despite the blowouts, ratings are good. Game 1 of Boston-Cleveland drew a strong 4.7 rating in metered markets for TNT, up 15 percent over last year’s opening game of the 2016 Eastern Conference finals.

Makes sense, Celtics are a bigger draw than Canada

quote:

Out west, Golden State’s ridiculously easy Game 2 win over San Antonio (136-100) drew a 4.3 rating for ESPN, just a tick down from a year ago from a conference final Game 2 it broadcasted in 2016.

LESS people are watching GS-SA this year over GS-OKC in 2016? Why is that?

We've know since the season started that barring major injury we would get round 3 of Cavs vs GSW in the Finals. These playoffs are just a formality to that end. If anything, it's strengthened to me that we could be on the brink of an epic Finals. Both teams are playing lights out and destroying everything in front of them...can't wait to see them meet again for the rubber match personally

I would not have guessed that. This has been the most stale, unexciting NBA playoffs I can remember. Hopefully the finals make up for it
