Is it perfectly acceptable for players lined along the key to cross the line into the paint well before the ball has left the shooter's hands?

I replayed a few free-throws last night and paused at release. Players are routinely already in the paint but it didnt get called.

You can even play with 6 players now.

yes, that's right up there with traveling as the most unenforced rules...

Why is it allowed? The NBA is getting harder and harder to watch with it's strategic and selective referreeing.

Watch all the calls DWade will get for getting breathed on at home where defenders will literally stand still and not even flinch, yet have fouls are called.

If the NBA followed the rules, the games would last 3 1/2 hours, and you would see scores along the lines of 67-59

Hand checking, traveling, lane violations, illegal screens, 3 seconds in the paint, holding or impeding an offensive player as he is running through screens, palming, double dribble, and offensive fouls are all selectively called. In fact, Hand checking, though illegal, is never called.

Then why have the rules? Seems the rules are flexible so they can have more control over the outcome and favor certain marketing strategies.

Why is that acceptable to NBA fans? That's like if in MLB star hitters would get a foul ball called as fair even if it clearly was foul.

The rules aren't just flexible, they're merely guidelines. Dribbling is optional, palming went away years ago, and traveling is hardly ever called. I no longer have any interest in the game.

Another thing that never gets called is a player not being beyond the line on an inbound after a made bucket. Even some of the lamest attempts you will ever see don't get a second look. It's trickled down to the college game greatly too. There are some rules to me that are more clear cut then others, and they need to start being enforced, or start changing the rules.

Is a free-throw shooter allowed to pump-fake in order to draw a lane violation?

You also need to remember that if a player is in the lane early and his teammate misses it, it doesn't get called, just like if the opponent is in the lane early and the shooter makes it, it doesn't get called. If the opposite of these two scenarios happens, yes, it's supposed to be called and the shooter another free throw.

Rose is amazing to watch - as are the Bulls in general - but he does palm the ball a lot. I think the refs mostly make calls if they feel a player either got a distinct advantge or disadvantage by doing it. Rose palming the ball out front doesn't really do much for him.

they used to call violations all the time when shaq took 20+ ft/game. he would miss the first 2 and then he'd get the extra one and miss that one too
