The "NBA 2K eLeague," as the gaming competition will be known, will start in 2018. The teams in the basketball gaming league will be managed by actual NBA franchises. It will start with eight to twelve teams and eventually the NBA expects all 30 to be represented in the gaming league.

The gaming league will mimic the actual NBA. Gamers will be recruited through virtual try-outs leading to a draft during which teams will choose five players each. From there the teams will follow an 82-game schedule leading to playoffs and a championship.

Moving into eSports opens up a new revenue stream for the NBA, which had revenues over $5 billion for the 2014/15 season. According to the Newzoo report, revenues for eSports grew 51% in 2016 to $493 million. It expects the industry to break the $1 billion mark in 2019.

I think this is a pretty badass way to interact with fans, especially the younger group. I might have to get back into 2K now myself

Wonder how long before the NFL and MLB do something similar?

Where was this when I was younger and actually good at these games because I played them nonstop!!!

I'm 38 years old now, and I swear my gaming skills in hoops/football/baseball mimic that of a 38 year vet who used to be elite, and now can barely walk out there.

I wonder how you get into try outs. I've got a friend who's damn good at 2k and that's about it

Yes! frick the CPA, I'll just be a professional video gamer. Just let me create an all 99 player and I'm good.

My 6'10" center with the skills of a point guard will be unstoppable.

Dibs on point guard for the Pels. We'd win so many titles

ETA: when the Pels finally get in on this

It IS great, because if your son is one of these e-teams, he'll probably be making a nice chunk of change at 13 years old, as compared to playing on the 8th grade basketball team without much of a future to make a living playing real basketball.

Funny you say this because 2k literally put those days to an end. Now your Center can only be one of the following: a prolific post scorer, a great rebounder, stretch 5, or a defensive stalwart. Bastarfs have made a videogame too realistic.

No need to create him, just trade for Giannis

When I say younger and played video games nonstop, I mean like when I was 27.

Finally, something for the fat and unathletic. Should be perfect for some of you.
