2007: LSU
2008: Florida
2009: Alabama
2010: Auburn
2011: Alabama

** denotes a team outside of the Southeastern portion of the United States. Some could argue Texas is, but for the sake of good discussion, let's just consider them note. Texas, much like California, is a country in itself.

My question to you all is, in your opinion, what makes the Southeastern portion so much better in football? Obviously, you'd lead to players. Why do you think they are better than the vast majority of the country? Ohio, California, Texas, and Pennsylvania produce great talent, but for how little population these states have (relative to the rest of the country), it is quite remarkable the talent that comes out.

There is 7 different schools in there from 4 different states (Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, and South Carolina). It is crazy talent. A lot of times, it is Southeastern states beating other Southeastern states (Alabama vs. LSU, Auburn vs. Florida State, Alabama vs. Clemson).

More black people playing football.

That's not racist, it's just true.

Cotton, tobacco and slavery might have something to do with it.

States like Maryland, New Jersey, Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio have a large African American population. In fact, in terms of sheer numbers, we have more just due to the fact that we have a much bigger population that Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina.

Basketball is big up here, but football is too. And there is talent (look at Ohio for example).

It is just a cycle. It will cycle west or back up north again.

There also was a facilities race, which wasn't joined until recently by others.

Florida, Texas, and Georgia have been steadily growing more than almost all other states. This is a big reason FSU, Florida and Da U all became powerhouses in the 80s/90s

Football and outdoor sports can be played year round.

Having the highest black population.

I don't really want to go into this topic, but they are different in the south.

Something so blatantly obvious completely slipped my mind. That's a really good point.

I would imagine that they play basketball up there more than football due to the weather.

Are they really different than Chicago, Detroit, Flint, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington DC, Gary, Trenton?

It can't be completely explained by African American populations, but that explains a lot of it. AA population rank in the US:

#1 Georgia 3,150,435
#3 Florida 2,999,862
#4 Texas 2,979,598
#6 North Carolina 2,048,628
#9 Virginia 1,551,399
#10 Louisiana 1,506,534
#14 South Carolina 1,290,684
#15 Alabama 1,251,311
#17 Mississippi 1,074,200
#18 Tennessee 1,055,689
#19 Missouri 704,043
#22 Arkansas 449,595
#24 Kentucky 361,273

ETA: Tack on the Division I football playing schools per capita in those areas, and you get a higher concentration of blacks per school in the Southeast than in other areas.

A greater ratio are. Of course, some move out but a majority of their families have stayed in the same area.
