MPSA Football Powerhouses in North LA; Clubs Full of Talent in the 90s

For those of us who remember watching the rise of Evangel in the 90s, too many forget another ‘golden era’ that is unfortunately cast-aside through disdain, ignorance, or even jealousy.
The Mississippi Private School Association (MPSA) had some absolute power-houses in the same era, even into the mid-2000s, from teams spread across North Louisiana and into Mississippi.
Who remembers watching Claiborne Academy, Glenbrook, Mt. Olive, and other MPSA clubs spread across North LA?
I always suspected they were unfortunately lost in the annals of history because their racial makeup was nearly 100% White, steeped in the traditions of tax-paying citizens’ right to determine the course of their children’s education. But that’s another story for another board, I suppose.
I would place these teams against Evangel or West Monroe, or definitely against any team from South Louisiana with no hesitation. They could have even beaten Haynesville on a regular basis.
It was no secret that Evangel was hesitant to play in the Private School leagues, because there were just too many old-fashioned, smash-mouth clubs they would have to get beat-up by on a weekly basis.
Who remembers watching, or even playing for these teams?
I was watching LHSAA highlights this morning while reading the newspaper, and was surprised at the comical pace they were playing.
Not sure about the current status of a lot of those teams, but I think the MPSA folded up or at least changed names.

I remember someone else making this exact same thread...

I saw some MPSA playoff games in the time period you are talking about. It was like watching JV football. NO speed, little power, no WOW athletes.
I know of at least one kid who was a championship game MVP who transferred to an MPSA school because he could not get on the field at a very average 2A LHSAA high school.
Maybe those schools could have kept it close with Lake Providence (General Trass) or Grambling who were just bad during that span, but the powerhouses or even the playoff teams would have won by three touchdowns minimum.

Any of those teams then or now would get absolutely destroyed by Evangel then and Evangel and Calvary now. I've seen both then and now.

Prairie View Acadamy, Tallulah Academy, Briarfield

False River Academy leaving LISA was pretty much equivalent to Va Tech/Miami leaving the Big East. FRA's roster in the early 90's was littered with living legends such as Dwayne Cooper.

Haynesville is no WM or Evangel

I thought the reason teams didn't play teams in the MPSA was liability reasons. I heard that was why Central and Central Private rarely played.

I left a private school my senior to attend a public AAA school in the best district. I started at running back and returned punts and kicks. If I would have stayed at the private school though I would have put up video game numbers. I did get a full ride but they had first taken notice of me in MPSA.

Competition in MPSA was never comparable to public. Yes there were teams that would be competitive but not one would have won a championship.

Funny, you mention the ones that sucked during the high point of MPSA (1993-1998). Claiborne Academy vs. West Monroe? What do you want to do -- kill these kids?
Glenbrrok was decent and put up a good team every now and again...but again these are teams that weren't that great overall.
False River can tell you just how life became when they didn't join MPSA and went to LHSAA.
Now, the old LISA days in the 1980's:
Riverside
Parkview
River Oaks
Sillman
Central Private
Sam Barth
Briarfield
Tallulah
Belmont
Oak Forest
Saint Joseph's High
That was good football that I would equate to 2A Public.

I just remember there were some vey good teams that could have dominated at the 5A level.
Maybe not Glenbrook at this time, but Mt. Olive had some real good teams before they went defunct.

Have 1st hand experience with this one.
He would've started for any public school in the state. If not at RB then at LB.
Played him in the state championship in 07, he was as good as advertised.

And the fact Central Private isn't even on the same playing level as Central.

That is case now but from '88-'92, Central Football sucked and CP had kids that would have played and started. It would have been close. Today it wouldn't even be worth of admission.

Yeah kids went to I central private whenever their dad got pissed because their son wasn't getting any playing time on the freshmen squad and thought he was the next Ed Reed
Their was like maybe 18 kids on central privates roster when I went to Central
