Should have been Lions ball at the 5 yard line. All turnovers are reviewble..

Can you explain this to me? Why wouldn't it be a touchback?

He could have picked it up and ran out of the endzone and it would have been a touchback oddly enough

Because the batting takes place before the ball goes out, therefore the penalty took place before the touchback.

Let's not start a conspiracy.
Ref was right there and missed the call. It wasn't even a judgment call (well it kinds is, have to determine if it is intentional or not, but in this case it was pretty obvious), he just stood there starring at it. The dumbass just didn't know the rule.

Illegal touching of the defense which means the turnover wouldn't count. Ball would be given back to the offense. 1st down at the .5 yard line

You can't bat the ball intentionally anywhere on the field after a fumble or onside kick etc.

But can you review that aspect of the rule? Seems like a judgment call by the refs that normally isn't reviewable. (Not saying you can argue he didn't bat the ball out, he clearly did... just not sure if it could have been overturned on review.)

Not trying to, just stating the obvious.

The possession changed due to a touchback which makes the play reviewable still

It's definitely a judgement call, because it's up to the official to determine whether or not he intentionally batted the ball.

So, I doubt that aspect of the play if reviewable upstairs.

Ah ok, makes sense now. If it would have fumbled on it's own and no one touched it then it would just be a touchback. Because Wright hit it out it's a penalty. Gotcha

I don't see why so many people on tv are saying they had never heard of this rule.

You can't intentionally bat the ball anywhere on the field if you haven't possessed it yet. That's not common knowledge?

The reason why the illegal bat is never called on punters is because the result of the play is a safety and the penalty is never accepted.

Yeah, because even if they accepted the penalty, it's not like they'd get the ball with a chance to get a touchdown.
