Business needs to pick up.

DC will for sure get a reliever, even if they go cheap and get one of MIL's guys. Papelbon almost blew another last night and Dusty is on a mission to ruin him. 5 games in 7 days. Fastball now at 89.

Trade deadline needs to be moved back a week or two. Too many teams still have a shot right now with the 2nd WC.

I agree. NYM for example could fall out and then Cespedes is potentially on the market. Just one example I can think of.

KC, Yankees, Tigers are all close enough to be buyers still. Another week or two they could be sellers

Moves can still be made after the trade deadline, but it involves waivers and is more difficult, but it can be done.

yeah but the actual deadline should be moved, forget the WW process that could still occur after the deadline as well

The deadline is fine. The season is 60% over. That's plenty of time. Yankees are really the only AL team on the fence, but they should stay in it considering Baltimore's pitching.
Royals aren't in it (behind the White sox in standings; 2.5 games ahead of the As)
Tigers clearly are in it.
Gotta draw a line somewhere. August 1 makes sense.

Guys like Braun will soar through waivers. But no one's giving up much for Braun, so they just as soon keep him.

Are you basing this on one year or have you always felt this way? Honestly, I kind of feel like the Yankees are doing the right thing moving Chapman but standing pat otherwise.

felt this way since they introduced the WC and especially now with the 2nd WC. too many teams are close who normally would be sellers.

Kinda felt that way with their bullpen all along.

If they reach a point where they fall further out (and they've played ok since the break and Baltimore looks shaky as do many AL teams ) Beltran and be gotten thru waivers and most teams can still get deals done after the deadline

but none of the elite guys

KC, NYY, NYM, Sea, Det, Pit all within 2-5 games of the WC spot. move the deadline back and these teams have a better idea if they should be buyers or sellers. would probably get some bigger names into the mix as well.

yeah with the extra WC etc I really don't see a big problem moving the deadline back a week. Maybe has some Union issue thing or something, but they should probably do it

ETA: shite I missed the Cashner deal. I was in mourning over my pitiful fricking Mets not being able to get one fricking hit with a man in scoring position. Argh, frick more bad news, Marlins have become legit, Gordon is back, Cashner Mattingly has them playing good ball. Damn damn damn my day is gonna suck

Rangers are reportedly still in contact with the White Sox and Rays regarding Sale and Archer.

What I've heard on Archer is that his numbers are bad since there are a lot of "hitter-friendly" ball parks in the AL East. However, Globe Life and Minute Maid are also hitter-friendly, so I'd be concerned that his numbers wouldn't be any better here.

Sale is a concern due to his recent meltdown. The Rangers' clubhouse chemistry is why they haven't completely imploded and I wouldn't want to see them add a troublemaker to destroy that (especially since his "apology" was him shifting blame on the White Sox management). Then again, White Sox management is really bad FWIH so maybe he'd do better with a change of scenery.

I guarantee that there is not one single team in the league who is saying, "Yeah, Chris' meltdown has totally made him not an option for us."

But like I think TDuecen said yesterday, I don't think Sale moves until the off-season.

No teams say it but they probably do think it.

I think it was a one-off, we've not heard anything bad about him before (as opposed to Yasiel Puig, Yordano Ventura, etc.) The White Sox have poor clubhouse chemistry and when your team is marginal that's the last thing you can afford to have (see how the White Sox have faltered badly after starting the season excellent).

The Rangers are also marginal; we see the gaping holes in the rotation and bullpen. And the offense has a lot of problems. But the great clubhouse chemistry allows them to get through it (maybe not for the entire season but for a lot longer than with other clubs).

The Sox don't have clubhouse chemistry issues, they have issues with Ken Williams. the players get along just fine.
