He’ll receive a signing bonus of some size (up to about $10 million) depending on which club he ultimately joins and then sign a standard uniform player contract that binds him to the arbitration system until he accrues six years of service time.

That means that, as a rookie next year, Ohtani will be scheduled to make something like $545,000, the league minimum for 2018. And he won’t be in line for a real market-rate salary until after the 2023 season. If Otani stayed in Japan for two more years and stayed healthy, he’d be able to land the monster free-agent deal four years sooner. There’s no way around it: coming over this winter will cost Otani a lot of money.

How to sign Otani

It seems crazy that he just won't wait a year. Seems like he is giving up hundreds of millions.

you have to think someone goes out the box with a way to pay him more money, whether it is having endorsements ready for him or a guaranteed hefty 2nd contract agreement under the table of some sort. That is a lot of money that no American pro athlete would risk, that is for sure

Maybe he just really wants to leave Japan and play against the best players in the world. I mean if every athlete cared only about the money, most of the top soccer players in the world would be playing in China right now.

I'd have to assume he has tons of endorsements already lined up. It won't make up the total amount of money lost, but it can compensate some of it.

Makes me think he has major markets targeted already where he will make a ton in endorsements

MLB players don't typically make a ton in endorsements in the US though and I would think he makes a lot endorsement wise in Japan already

Yeah I would think he's going to an AL team. Could see the Angels and Mariners as dark horses

It would be interesting if an NL team got him though to see how they would use him

In what alternate universe? JD still has to pay for Choo and Fielder for two more years.

I think it would be a lot easier if he was going to predominately be a position player who would pitch out of the pen every 3rd day

I don't know how it would work when he needs to get rest and ready for his starts

If anyone wouldn't be afraid to use him as a 2 way player in the NL, it's Joe Maddon

Yeah for sure. Moving him from LF to the mound in the 6th inning or later and essentially keeping him in the lineup as a DH would be interesting. Might be asking a lot of him though

Especially with some of the scrubs in the bullpen pretending to be pitchers.

(Looking at you Rondon and Grimm)

He's going to be a starter. It would be crazy to see him go from the outfield to the mound in the 6th or 7th inning, but that would probably mess with his starting schedule. He would most likely need 5 days of rest instead of 4

Even better. If the cubs did somehow land him, that would mean Lackey could GTFO.

The rotation would be a tough thing to manage but that's a good problem to have for whatever team gets him.
