Guys, this story has been perpetuated by the media and Jordan forever. I remember my HS basketball coach telling the story about Jordan being "cut", but even back then he noted he made the JV team and was not actually cut. So the truth was there 2 decades ago and people knew it, but it morphed over the years to fit the Jordan legend better.
As a 9th grader, Jordan made the JV team. Which is pretty damn good for a 9th grader if there is also a freshman team as well. Then he grew 5-6 inches and made varsity as a 10th grader which is still good. The coach did not slight Jordan in the least, but Jordan and the media together have always presented it that way.

Babe Ruth is more famous today, but on the first ballot of the Baseball Hall of Fame, Ty Cobb got more votes. In his own day, he was considered the GOAT. Why does no one idolize Ty Cobb today? Because he was the biggest jerk in sports. Seriously read this story and tell me that Jordan's jerk level is even in the same league as Cobb's.
There have been great athletes who were great people, and there have also been great athletes who were crummy people. In that respect, athletes are simply a subset of humanity.
ETA: the Wikipedia entry on Ty Cobb has a lot more. No athlete today compares in any way to Cobb as a thug.

No athlete has had the fame of MJ so why is it so surprising he was a dick? Spent 7 years not winning a title and getting ripped apart before he broke through and won 6.

Just another guy getting the masses to read his bullshite. Everyone knows MJ has a massive ego. Kobe Bryant is a bigger dick. All this crap about him running around with women is old hat all rich athlete's do this. Magic was probably Jordan's running mate. But you got A Rod, Jeter, tons of football guys and the list goes on. They all do it. As for his HS coach sorry to hear about his condition, but I don't know if that led to his drinking. Even still if he was sent to the Jr varsity he still didn't make the Sr varsity which means he was in essence cut.
