Maria Sharapova has been suspended for two years by the International Tennis Federation for testing positive for meldonium at the Australian Open.

The ruling, announced Wednesday, can be appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The five-time Grand Slam champion was provisionally suspended by the ITF in early March, when she announced at a news conference in Los Angeles that she failed a doping test in January.

Per Drugs.com

quote:

Maria Sharapova had been taking Meldonium since 2006. Her family doctor had prescribed it for her irregular EKGs, magnesium deficiency, and a family history of diabetes

Alright, nothing wrong there.

quote:

Sharapova claims she was unaware Meldonium had been added to the WADA list of banned substances

And there's where I call BS.

Waiting for Serena's doping test.

Seems a bit excessive. Am I right that it was formally banned in August and the positive test was in January? I am not reading any more about it.

I imagine her income won't hurt a bit.

Anyway, I think she or her reps received several warnings.

I thought I read that these are drugs you take short term if you're prescribed, not as a regimen forever. That said, some guy on an MMA show said this stuff is just accepted in Russia as no big deal and like a vitamin supplement, so it's creating some conflict in that sport.

I don't follow tennis very hard, is this not an extreme length of a suspension?

I read up on this story when it first came out.
1) Why the hell did she go to a Russia/Eastern European doctor for her problem? I find it complete bullshite on one of her first trip to Russia she gets a doctor to prescribe her something in a place where she doesn't even live.

2) You cant get Meldonium legally in the USA. The only way you can get it is through some sketchy looking websites. She essential smuggled it in the USA.

3) Finally her dosage,
quote:

Maria said she has been taking it for 10 years. Manufacturers said the normal dosage is four to six weeks, every now and again. Was Maria closer to the latter?

A) That’s exactly right, she did not take it every day. The manufacturer said four to six weeks, two to three times a year, or as recommended by her doctor. Her course of treatment was certainly more along those lines than taking it every day for 10 years.

bullshite.... She knew exactly why she was taking it

I hate to break it to you but this isn't going to happen. We had this debate of the forums and Serena William is one of the most test athletes in the world. She may be a bitch but she doesn't cheat.

I do find hilarious how Maria Sharapova got caught cheating. How the hell are you going to cheat for 10 years and still get your arse whooped?
