Miami Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria has agreed to sell the franchise for $1.2 billion to a group led by New York businessman Bruce Sherman and former New York Yankees star Derek Jeter, and Major League Baseball is expected to receive the written agreement on Friday, according to a New York based MLB source.

Sherman, a wealthy venture capitalist who has a home in New York and is building a home in South Florida, will be the “control person,” similar to a managing general partner.

But Jeter, the former New York Yankees star shortstop, will run the business and baseball sides of the organization, the source said.

The Sherman/Jeter group has about 16 investors and they have raised the money to purchase the team after months of seeking investors to meet Loria’s asking price, the source said.

Jeter is believed to be contributing only $25 million of his own money but has a great relationship with Sherman, who will allow Jeter to essentially run the organization.

Among the other investors: former NBA star Michael Jordan, who’s a friend of Jeter.

So torn...happy that the the Marlins will get a new owner who is not a terrible human being, but pissed off Luria is going to make so much money off this.

Well that seems like a dumb idea. It's not a terrible idea to let Jeter be the "face" of ownership. But to actually let him run the business?

Those guys had plenty of business experience before getting into front office roles.

you don't consider him managing his brand business experience?

ever heard of "the players' tribune"?

jeter started that company and still runs it.

a quick google search shows me that he's been heavily involved with multiple business endeavors since retiring.

For every Elway, Bird and Magic there's more than a few Michael Jordans, Wayne Gretzkys, and Matt Millens.

Uh. How?

Those are former great players who took executive roles with no experience.

He has no experience running a professional sports organization. Somehow I thought that assertion would be clear via context clues.

he's been around the business his entire adult life. I'm sure even if he did't run one yet he's got a pretty good idea of how to run one now.

and it was lsuhoohoo who said something about business experience in general so I take back my comments to you.
