Longhorns and ESPN reach TV Deal

The University of Texas has struck a 20-year, $300 million deal with ESPN for a new, 24-hour network that will broadcast Longhorn sports and some non-athletic content such as campus musical performances.
quote:
The agreement does not replace existing contracts involving ESPN-ABC and Fox for sports content of the Big 12 Conference, of which UT is a member. Powers said he anticipates that the new network would carry one or two football games, a larger but unspecified number of men’s basketball games and a variety of other men’s and women’s sports, including volleyball and swimming.
Now if we can just win a football game...

Good. Another ESPN show that will help me fall asleep.

Pretty ridiculous.
I can see this happening with a few other major schools.

The agreement covers distribution of sports and non-sports programming through a variety of platforms, including cable TV, satellites and smart phones. Powers said he anticipates that the network would be included among some of the basic cable system channels in Texas and Oklahoma, and perhaps in parts of Louisiana. Elsewhere in the country, it’s likely to be offered as a premium, perhaps part of a sports package or as a stand-alone channel, he said.

Expect a June announcement from A&M that they are no longer apart of the Big 12-2. Bookmark this post.

I think they're hoping that Auburn's accreditation has been pulled by then, leaving one spot open within the SEC West.

Slive has an open invitation whether its 13 teams or 14 teams. I know for a fact he has been at Regent Wilson's ranch as recent as the end of the Football season.
The Texas deal was the straw that broke the Big 12-2 back and what will get National Realignment going again. Texas knows this and expects it all to go down again. Big 12-2 will default on their promise to A&M. On top of that, heavy donors of A&M could care less if they play the Texas schools again.
The June time frame is important because its after the Texas Legislature finishes their current session and more importantly education budgets.
The more important question is what will OU do? I have heard (not confirmed) that they have an open invitation from Slive as well.... We'll see.

So we kick the entire state of Alabama to the east, to make room for some OU/aTM fans?

I don't know the logistics, just that Slive was willing to do it, so that he could be proactive in regards to the dominoes falling. Slive and the SEC really want the Dallas and Houston TV markets, BAD!

I hate to say it, but I think thats the raw end of the deal.

They will do whatever UT tells them to do.

Not for LSU it ain't. If we get OU an aTm over Bama every year then I'm happy.

the question is how badly ESPN/CBS want these markets
to make financial sense, ESPN/CBS would have to re-write our contracts to increase payout about 17% just for each SEC team to break even

In the realignment picture, you have three TV players.
ESPN/ABC
CBS
FOX
Watch what happens when the ball really starts going downhill. The TV agreements that will roll up in 2012-2014 are going to be insanity when you compare them to current contracts.
