Famed media personality Dan Patrick spoke about a report on his show Wednesday morning which indicated that Riley could be looking to leave Los Angeles in favor of an NFL job. This would understandably be a massive blow to the program considering Riley's been in LA for only two years.
Specifically, the report Patrick referenced came via InsideUSC with Scott Wolf.
In a blog entry Wednesday morning, Wolf broke down his report on USC's head coach:
"In NFL coaching circles, the talk is that Lincoln Riley is putting out feelers about taking a job in the NFL next season. To be clear, this chatter was going around last week and has nothing to do with USC’s loss to Notre Dame. The word is Riley would be open to an NFL job if he could follow Caleb Williams to the same franchise. If the Chicago Bears had the No. 1 pick, it would probably [be] ideal for this theory."
- Scott Wolf per InsideUSC
Wolf also adds some speculation as to a potential scenario for Riley and Williams:
"The other part of the theory is that an NFL team would tell Riley who to hire, especially on the defensive staff, to avoid some of the pratfalls that have happened in college. If Riley is serious about wanting to coach only 10 more years, it makes sense that he would go to the NFL sooner than later."

If he only wants to follow Williams and would have his staff built by the front office, he’ll be a disaster. Probably worse than Urban Meyer.

If this is true, why the hell would he attach his future to Williams? Are he and Williams in a relationship?

Kliff Kingsbury part 2. It'll work out a few years before he fizzles and ends up back in college somewhere.

Does Lincoln idolize Lane Kiffin or something?

I’ll take him over Dennis Allen. Hell, I’ll take an actual monkey over DA tho

I can hear the Deion to USC hype now.

What will Riley do if the Bears end up drafting Maye and Williams ends up falling to the Broncos? Because there's no way Denver will be firing Sean Payton after one year.

If I’m an NFL owner, why not try a successful college coach over yet another mediocre NFL retread with a history of being fired?

Wins per year: 5->8->11 (playoffs) then last year's dumpster fire.

Saints should be hiring him today to be OC.

OC in New Orleans is a downgrade from Head Coach at USC. And I'm a Saints fan.

Problem is college coaches always demand complete control over personnel to make the jump to the NFL. It's the biggest reason why the failure rate of college coaches is so high. Teams will have to hire a top-notch talent evaluator willing to cede control over personnel decisions to be the GM AND the college coach will have to successfully balance making personnel decisions while still being able to coach at a high level.

as long as he doesn't kick people, he shouldn't be that bad.

Everything about this guy just screams money chasing spineless pussy. Imagine being a grown man who’s trying to piggyback off of a 22 year old in order to make a career jump. He needs to hang up the head coaching headset and just go be an NFL QB’s coach for some franchise where he can hide from competition and do nothing to afford his beach house and thot wife’s lifestyle
