The LHSAA’s select/nonselect pendulum swung again on the day that the organization's executive committee heard appeals on behalf of 68 schools and then went into deliberations.

Schools will receive results of their appeals on Friday. After more than four hours in closed session, executive director Eddie Bonine said the appeals leave the LHSAA with 217 nonselect schools and 193 select schools.

Before the appeals, the numbers were flipped with 219 select and 191 nonselect schools based on an LHSAA staff survey of schools.

“The schools under the select designation this office made got to offer a justification on why they should not be select,” Bonine said. “And that (appeals) flipped it back. It’s not 50/50, but the irony of it is that was 46 (% nonselect) to 53 (% select) and now it's … 52.97 (%) nonselect and 47.07 (%) select. “That (50/50 split) was not the goal.

The fall meeting concludes with a 10:30 a.m. Thursday session that will focus on finalizing playoff structures for select/nonselect schools in football, basketball, baseball softball for the 2022-23 school year.

Bonine said schools will be notified whether their appeals were denied or approved Friday morning. The playoff structure for the select/nonselect sports is scheduled for release on Friday afternoon.

Key playoff structure topics on Thursday will include bracket sizes and the number of classes/divisions in the select/nonselect sports.

So stupid. People left having to argue whether they are select or non-select. The split is awful.

It waters everything down especially the non-select playoff brackets. The appeals to be reclassified as non-select is such a shite show.

Is it confirmed that there will only be four select and four non-select brackets? And they will basically be redivided to be have as close to equal numbers in each pool as possible?

This has been going on for so long that I forgot what the initial fight was even about

Do people really have an issue separating schools that can take kids from ONLY a certain region versus a school that can take kids from anywhere?

Because that was not how we did it for 90 years. For 90 years we decided who the best was on the field. Now in every class two teams can claim to be the best and they don’t always play.

What private school is getting kids outside their region?

Many is getting kids from all of Sabine parish probably some out of parish
Tell me who has more talent Many, ND, Newman, or St Charles?

Or how about Zachary vs Catholic or Westgate vs STM?

In every major city in the state a kid can go to any public school he wants

It’s 2022 every single school recruits now whether you choose to believe it or not. The split is trash and waters down every single championship

The process has been flawed from day one. You have public schools that have loopholes that allow them to mine throughout there parish via Magnet school/school of choice/open enrollment programs that vary from parish to parish. That was part of what was supposed to be addressed with the newer split.

But you have a school like Many that is the only public in the parish that plays football so is able to take kids from other high school districts so they can play football but are still classified by their enrollment numbers and are non select despite the fact they can pull from a 4 or 5 A population.

And all this started because John Curtis and Evangel were usually winning in whatever division they played in. If you go back pre split you will see that publics generally won in higher divisions that did not include JC and privates in the lower divisions. Even with JC and Evangel the title numbers were fairly close with, if I remember correctly, a slight edge to publics over the 10 years prior to the split.

I am pretty sure Evangel has kids from 4 different states on their roster.

Let’s say that’s true… and three of the states are… La,Tx and Ark..

Now let’s also realize that two of those states are within 10 miles for one and 30 miles fir the other..

I will not defend evangels past indiscretions but the state organization shouldn’t have suffered bc of evangel and JC.. deal with them separately

As for Curtis.. they skated the line but the fix was simply to put them in the Catholic league regardless of enrollment numbers

Yeah I don’t get it either. Private schools just think they’re better than everyone else, and should be allowed to do whatever they want, and also think they have a right to compete with schools, who they steal players from. It’s backwards, but that’s Louisiana for you.

A former catholic league principal was one of the creators of the "play in class" rule because they were tired of eca and didn't WANT jc in 5a/ catholic league.

Looking at the state rankings and Curtis’s championships, I think it’s pretty clear they’ve BEEN better than everyone else

Well yeah, whenever you’re allowed to get whoever the hell you want, you should be pretty good.

A lot of schools get whoever the hell they want and don’t win though

And what’s to say that public schools can’t steal kids back too? Look at Zachary and Redemptorist

That’s cause they can’t get whoever the hell they want. They’re getting all the leftovers and people who are going there for academic purposes, not for sports.
