I remember when he was just a myth. You'd see small stories in the sports section that Larry Bird of Indiana State had 40 points, 19 rebounds and 8 assists against New Mexico or somebody. Hell, it was a long time before casual basketball fans even knew he was white.

I saw yesterday that ESPN is doing a 2 part 30 for 30 type documentary on the Celtics/Lakers rivalry. Suppose to air sometime next summer. They are conducting the interviews right now. They guys doing it are responsible for some of the best 30 for 30's that have aired already. I am super pumped for it.

My favorite Larry Bird story is the one where he's at the ASG 3 point shootout competition, he walks into the locker room and points out at the other contestants "2nd, 3rd, 4th."

Indiana State was the NCAA basketball Final Four runner-up in 1968...in Division II.

About 10 years later with Larry Bird and a bunch of nobodies, they were NCAA basketball Final Four runner-up in Division I.

It was the Sycamores first ever Division I NCAA tournament and still to this day is the deepest run by a first-time participant in the Division I tournament appearance history.

I mean, who does that?

Before Larry Bird the Sycamores went:

12-14
12-14
13-12

Larry Bird arrives on campus...

25-3
23-9
33-1

Larry Bird leaves campus...

16-11
9-18
9-19

It has been painful realizing that over the years.

Ok, I'll play.

He played for the most successful, and most storied franchise in the history of the NBA. The great players they've had, and many of whom are in the HOF, he is probaby #1 or #2 on that list depending on whether or not you think he's better than Bill Russell.

Yeah he's overrated as frick.
