No shot in hell Kobe takes that kind of pay cut even if it is for one season. Why in the world would he take $1.45 million to help the Lakers when he will prob only be playing ball for a couple more years?

So Melo would go to miami to come off the bench and have his minutes reduced by 35%? What?

What I should have said was Battier's place in their small ball offense. Basically, instead of having a guy who sets screens and spots up in the corner, they would have a guy who can spot up, but they could also run their offense through. Lebron and Melo could be interchangeable in the sets they run for Lebron, especially when it's designed to get him in the post.

Trade $20 something million for a slim chance at a championship... Nah. It isn't like saying "Kobe, will you take a $20 mil pay cut if we guarantee a Championship?"

Kobe is a volume shooter, and he is good at creating shots. I don't see his offensive production going down because anywhere he goes he will expect to be the main attraction. And I don't see a coach calling him out anytime soon.

This will be a big deal when it comes to pass. Hopefully he takes a modest but not ridiculous 2-3 year deal. If he took the minimum ppl would say he cheated to get a title. If he took a big contract ppl would (deservedly) call him selfish. Either way he needs to have made his money by now. He should be willing to sacrifice a bit this time for the lakers.

The Bobby B thing is taking an annuity to be paid out over an extended period like 10-20 years starting at some point in the future. I have no idea if NBA rules would allow it though. I sorta doubt it.

Example:

Pay Kobe 1M in 2014 and give him an annuity starting in 2020 to be paid out at $1.5M a year from 2020-2040.

Have no idea how that would jive with NBA rules though and how much would count towards the 2014 cap.

Ah. That's right. I was thinking how Bonilla's production decreased. Which makes sense. Teddy did say "Deal". I didn't read it correctly.

Ya, I could really see this as a viable option for "star" players who want to try to win before going out. It makes sense.

You max out your contracts while you are young, since you never know when injury may occur and end your career. By the tail end, in the hunt for championships, you take the annuity, which could be a real smart financial move as well as competitive move for the player, guaranteeing income for a good part of their retirement years.

I really wonder if NBA rules prohibit it or not, and if so, I don't really see a drawback for the players, and perhaps they should try to get it into a future CBA.

(The drawback is bankruptcy of the organization/the league, but I don't think any one would consider that a risk great enough at the present time to merit much resistance)

lets get real here, kobe is 34 and has just torn his achilles tendon. There is a possibility he never plays again(unlikely as that my be), there is also a possibility that if he does play again he would only be playing at a value of a vet minimum (unlikely again but possible). In the end, it is my belief that Kobe comes back, play at a high level again, but will take a pay cut.

Could he? Sure.
Will he? No.
Anyone know how well off Kobe is financially right now? I doubt he's an Iverson type but I doubt he's that financially savvy. I'm not sure if he's liked enough to get the kind of post retirement income that Shaq gets from TNT, endorsements, etc.

He won't do that. His drive is exceeded by his ego. He wouldn't take a lesser role on the team in any substantial fashion to win another championship (esp meaning he won't take a lesser salary and he won't accept someone else being the #1 option even if they should be)

Kobe playing for the minimum would be good for LA, but will he?

That's the gist of the article?

Least insightful article ever!

“I’m not taking any at all – that’s the negotiation that you have to have.” Kobe Bryant told Lakers Nation in an exclusive interview at his Kobe Basketball Academy on Wednesday. “For me to sit here and say, ‘Oh yeah, I’m just going to take a huge pay cut. Nah, I’m going to try to get as much as I possibly can.”

Will be interesting to see if the Lakers would be willing to get rid of a past his prime franchise player like the Celtics just did with Pierce.
