did the Lakers win that night?

Yep, and they needed nearly every bit of Kobe's 55 2nd half pts as well to win.

yeah maybe you should watch the game. They tried everything possible against him. There was no stopping him that night.

Actually they played a 2-3 zone and Bryant himself admitted he didn't understand why they never played man.

quote:

Jalen Rose: Our game plan against the Lakers, initially, we actually started out in a 2-3 zone. We were a team that didn't have much bulk up front. So our coaching staff decided the best approach to playing against the Lakers would be to keep them on a perimeter, and they thought that a 2-3 zone would be the remedy. The zone, it didn't work out so good. What ends up happening in the NBA when you're not pressuring passes, when you're not contesting shots -- you give a guy a rhythm.

Kurt Rambis, Lakers assistant coach, 1994-99, 2001-09; 2013-14; current New York Knicks associate head coach: They played zone and had multiple defenders on him, but they didn't do a whole lot to disrupt his rhythm. He kind of stayed in rhythm most of the game. I just remember thinking during the game that they're not disrupting him and he was getting shots all over the floor. To me, it just looked so easy for him. He was getting to whatever spot he wanted on the floor.

Kobe Bryant: I was just trying to work through my knee. My knee was really tight. So at the start of the game, I was just tiptoeing through things. There's one possession early in the game where I drove the ball baseline and just laid it up. From that first possession, I knew if I could get going it's going to be a great night because their rotations were extremely slow. For me to take two dribbles and get all the way to the basket meant I could really do some damage because their rotations were so slow. I started picking up on those things, and then I started attacking a little bit and probing a little bit, and then the jump shot started falling. I started getting in a rhythm, and the knees started loosening up, and then I just got on a roll.

Good article about 81 pt night

they didn't play zone the whole game. They played zone b/c the goal was to concentrate on Kobe only, b/c the rest of the team was playing terrible. Also, MoPete was in foul trouble the whole game. He had 3 fouls in the first half, and picked up two more when Kobe started going off in the 3rd quarter. That's when Jalen got his turn to get his arse whipped until MoPete came back in.
They tried many different things, and nothign was working. They tried Joey Graham on him and Kobe just blew by him. They started fouling him a lot in the second half, which is dumb considering he's pretty much an automatic free throw shooter, who just had a 62 consecutive streak broken that game. They tried denying him the ball. They tried doubling him the second he crossed half court. In the end, the Lakers would get him the ball and let him throw up whatever shot he wanted over however many people he wanted, and most of them went in that night.

Michael also owns the record for the most FGA in a game at 49. He only scored 64 in that game, in a loss.

Jordan Kobe and Iverson are littered all over the most FGA in a game in league history.

People conveniently forget how much of a ball hog Michael was, just like Kobe. Kobe averaged 4.7 assists per game over his career. Michael is at 5.3. Not really that big of a difference.

They were both ball hogs, and both forced a shite ton of shots over their careers, and are the two best scorers to ever play.

Great Post. Perception is everything.

Allen Iverson also averaged more assists ( 6.2/ game) than both Kobe & Jordan.( AI had some higher usage rates).

Jordan in fact was called selfish by some early in his career ,but it all went away when he won . But oddly not so much for Kobe after winning 5 Rings.

That generation of players including KoBe, TMac, Vince Carter ,Allen Iverson seem to get overly criticized due to Jordan worship & following right after him.

Unfavorably & unfairly comparing them to Jordan & relishing every mistep that proved that they weren't the ' next Jordan'.

The younger LeBron James also caught some of the ' not the next Jordan' & ' not even Kobe' over analyzation.

I mean if someone had a night where they put up, I don't even know what the comparison would be but lets just play this game for a second, 30+ assists, do you think anyone's question would be, but how many points did he score though?

One they got to the 4th quarter the Lakers knew they were going to win, it was just to see how many Kobe would get.
All of his teammates were giving him the ball every possession.
sounds like the exact opposite of when he faced the Suns in the playoffs around 2005.

Assisted the Lakers in winning.

The only & most important ' assist'.
