Smith has been accurate of late (though a lot of checkdowns) but Kaep stretched the field in one game about as much as Smith has in his best games. The upside is higher. Smith hasn't played well in the Dome historically.

I don't think it matters either way with the league's top rushing offense that lines up in 491848182 formations a game going against the worst run defense that as of a few weeks ago wasn't even pre-snap audibling.

Exactly..did Petrino win a championship? Was Arkansas ever a legitimate championship contender? Pretty sure the Saints won a super bowl recently.

Pointless stat: More people on the official niners board think Smith should start 45% to 42%. Although 10% of voters want Harbaugh under center.

I mean he played one game against another backup QB. And yea he had a good game (16-23 for 243 yards and 2 TD's) but it isn't like he went absolutely nuts. He also only had 10 rushing yards

So all that stuff about Smith being "their guy" and them not even wanting Peyton Manning in the offseason was obviously a big load of horse shite. Not that I didn't already think that but this would prove it

Not sure what Campbell starting opposite him really had to do with it. It wasn't a game of attrition where one offense's ineffectiveness hung the defense out to dry that eventually folded under pressure. Kaep bent an elite defense over from the start.

I don't know what "absolutely nuts" would constitute in your eyes. It's a run-first offense. That's a YPA of more than 10.5, which is better than any Brees game this season and all but one last year. Same's 462 yards and 4 TDs in this matchup last year got him a big fat L. That Kaepernick didn't even get to showcase his mobility is even more impressive. He stood in the pocket and unloaded, and didn't play captain checkdown and scramble very much, which most inexperienced QBs with mobility will do.

And yeah it's only one start and doesn't mean jack shite on Sunday. It often wouldn't mean jack shite for the league's stalwarts either. Every week is a different animal.

So we're in agreement that he had a good game, but not Matt Flynn last year typer game. I don't see how it's enough to get the nod over Smith when he's played very well this season and especially well in his last two starts. I'm almost positive Smiths injury has something to do with this

Which comeback will you use Sunday night after the Saints win:

1. We beat y'all last year

2. Our record is better than yours

3. You beat our backup QB

4. Something insulting the city of New Orleans

5. Something about the bounty

I don't think he's physically ready, but then again I would not be surprised if Smith ends up starting on Sunday and this is all BS.

If Kaep does start and doesn't play well it's not like Harbaugh has been afraid to be bold. He may be on a relatively short leash.

I actually think Harbaugh is just trolling an entire nation of football fans.

Yeah but how will that look when he goes back to Smith and says even though I completely threw you under the bus before, go back in there.

You're reading this completely wrong.

This decision definitely proves that they do have "their guy". Their guy is KAEPERNICK.

People forget that Smith wasn't drafted by this administration. Kaepernick was. They actually traded up for Kaepernick and think extremely highly of him.

Personally, and I'm not saying he has this kind of ceiling, but I think it's similar to the Packers being willing to let Favre go because they knew what they had in Rodgers.

The 49ers think extremely highly of Kaepernick and it's the reason they would pickup Manning and a long-term contract.

Alex Smith has played the Saints in the Superdome once since he was drafted.

A 34-10 loss in 2006...Smith was 14-28 for 171 yards, 1 TD, and 3 interceptions. 41.5 rating.

Wait, Jason Campbell was playing defense? I thought he was a QB. I also thought the Bears D was the best defense in the league.

He played better against the Bears D with only one week of first team snaps than ANY QB all year. All the analysts who saw the game were immensely impressed with his passing ability and control of the offense (touch on his passing, scanning the field for receivers, changing the plays at the line of scrimmage). And why does his lack of running yards matter?

Smith has played well because they don't make him pass. He's 31st in pass attempts.

Seriously?

What was "Homertastic"about anything I said? Did Brees not light up SF defense in the playoffs game after the slow start? Did Alex Smith not keep up with them and win the game? Has kaepernick not started ONE NFL game AT HOME.

If my post was homerism then literally every post on here made by anyone about their team is. Have a great thanksgiving dumbfrick.

I wouldn't worry about some of these guys. They all accuse saints fans of being idiot homers, then they turn around and make idiot homer statements. Its pretty funny.
