I just had a sinking feeling yesterday as soon as I saw him slumped over in the car. Reminded me of how Aryton Senna looked. God Bless his family and friends.

Sad to hear this news. I knew it wasn't good last night when they said he was unresponsive, etc.
Considering what hit him and how hard, I'm surprised he lived through the night. Or had he just been put on life support?
My condolences to the family.

was it the debris hitting him that killed him or the impact from the wall?

Godspeed to him and prayers for his family. The Indy cars are too fast and the safety program is horrible.

Hemingway said the only true sports are motor racing and bull fighting.

Met him at the LSU Alabama game last year with Michael Andretti tailgating.

Not quite - he also included mountain climbing.

But he also said it in an era where races were not likely to be without death or casualty.

Back then it was somewhat dangerous just to watch F1.

Debris. A 10-20 lbs piece of another car struck him in the head while he was going around 200mph. No helmet in the world will protect you from that

That is some of the worst luck I have ever seen in motor sports

I said the same thing last night. The amount of coincidental shite that happened throughout that entire race to put his head right there at that moment is hard to grasp.

Terrible but I thought he would be dead before they got him out of the car

Those speeds and a shot to the head. He had no chance.

shite, a lug nut could have hit him and killed him. If they even use a lug nut? Probably something fancier on an Indy car.

But to discuss safety in the sport with an exposed head is just silly. It looks like a fighter jet cockpit sort of, why not cover it?

Sad he died.

Hopefully he was an organ donor. I read that while he had neurological trauma, the rest of his body was in good shape.

Yep they will now have enclosed cockpits now. Sad indeed. RIP and my prayers go out to his family and friends.
