1983 was a great draft but it was also a great football year. We had the USFL were guys like Steve Young and Jim Kelly were lighting it up.

Really wish the USFL would have stuck around and tried to be spring exclusive. There is such a demand and market for it not to mention big names from college and NFL veterans who could fill it today. Or hell even the XFL, those games were wild and exciting.

We definitely need a notable spring football league.

I tend to agree in Elway's case.

The Colts were a dumpster fire of an organization to begin with under Irsay and there was notable tension between Jack Elway and Frank Kush going back to Kush's time with Arizona State.

Bo Jackson effectively did the same thing to Tampa Bay in 1986, which was nearly as bad of a dumpster fire under the Culverhouse family, but he doesn't get demonized because he actually DID go play baseball until he got drafted by the Raiders the next season.

Tampa Bay lied to Bo Jackson to ruin his eligibility. I'd say he was a bit deserved in blowing them off.

Is it just me or were John Elway and his dad the biggest prissy assholes around?

At least he was sort of holding a trump card with the baseball deal.

Eli and his dad pulled off the same thing, with basically just saying, 'we deserve whatever we want because we do.'

wouldn't be shocking... Al Davis had an impressive feud going with the league at the time.

Their reason was that Elway grew up and played college ball on the west coast and wanted to keep playing near there. He even said he didn't like the cold. Bradshaw's interview in the 30 for 30 is great though. "Go play baseball."

That wasn't the real reason. If you watched it closely the agent said that's just what they made up. They didn't like the way that the Colts organization was being run. Which I believe is a valid point. Now maybe he wanted to stay close to where he grew up which is something I could see as a natural thing for a kid who's stayed in the same place his whole life. But it was because they didn't like the way the organization was being run which is valid.
