JaMarcus Russell’s name comes up every year at draft time, as a cautionary tale about how bad a first overall pick can turn out. But Russell also wants NFL teams to consider him as a player who deserves another chance.

Russell told SI.com that he would like to play again, and he wrote a letter to every team saying so.

“As a former NFL player, I understand the daily grind that football operations can be,” Russell wrote. “I am prepared to be physically examined and to have my football IQ evaluated. I would sincerely like an opportunity to come to Dallas and meet with you and the coaching staff. I know that my name does not carry much weight in the NFL right now but I am more than the image that others have bestowed on me. I’ve been labeled as a bust, I have been labeled as lazy and I have been the target of many insults by the media. The blame for any negative press that I’ve received rests squarely on my shoulders.”

Russell says he’d be a water boy if that’s what it took to get a shot in the NFL, and that he’d run the scout team for free.

“You might see me back,” Russell said. “You never know.”

The reality is, we know: JaMarcus Russell will not get another chance at the NFL. Russell hasn’t played since 2009, when he threw three touchdown passes and 11 interceptions. Russell is done in the NFL, even if he doesn’t realize it.

no clue why he doesn't try to rehab his image in the arena league or CFL

JaMarcus was so good. I wish he'd get another shot.

Meh,

No problem with that, some guys are just sitting there waiting for the phone to ring.

I feel like JaMarcus was a shithead coming into the league, but from what I've seen and read, he seems to have matured a lot in the last few years. Would love to see him be successful.

yeah, time flies by pretty quick.

I figured if he was going to get another shot it would have been a few years ago... two maybe.. when he lost all that weight training with Jeff Garcia. I think he tried out with the Bears and maybe another team that I can't think of at the moment.

He'll be 31 before the season starts and in a video it was stated he's not in playing shape right now. If he wanted to play he'd be in Canada.

If he really wanted to play, if he was desperate to play, he'd be in shape right now.

And I highly doubt he wrote every team a different letter. He had his chances and now he needs to move on with his life.

JR was overrated in college and it showed in the pros.

How big a bust can you be when you never get another chance with a team, a life coach quits on you, and you're begging teams to be on the scout team for free?

Yep.

If he were serious he'd get shredded and make a high quality tape of himself going through QB drills or something like that. But he's writing these letters and he's still tubby? Why should anyone take him seriously?

Needs to take a page out of Marcus Dupree's book. He got back in shape, THEN approached teams and got a shot.

He could play somewhere, CFL, Arena if he were really motivated. He just wants an easy check.

Lol he was not overrated in college. If anything. He was underrated. Dude was a stud in every way. Quit trolling. Yes he was a flop in NFL. But don't bash his college career bc that was far from overrated

JR sucked arse @ AU and @ FL. Go back and look at the last minute of the AU game.

That low football IQ was on full display.

He played great the last 6-7 games of the year.

His college career was very, very underwhelming.

JR's fall from the NFL has a lot to do with when he was cut from the league and his drug position charge. During that offseason the NFL took a beating in the PR department (Vick,Pacman,Plaxico shooting). I'm not going to say that he's "blacklisted" from NFL rosters. But it is pretty strange that he can not make an offseason roster.

As far as his career with Oakland goes. I think people give him too much of a hard time for a franchise that was clearly in turmoil.

JaMarcus is going to be this generation's Jeff George, I guess, with somebody dusting off a "Why not take a flyer and see if he has anything left in the tank?" type of article every couple of years.

So are we judging CFL careers off of two games now?

If so, I know a QB from Tennessee who never got passed Florida.
